It was 1 a.m. by the time I wrapped up at the hospital. I'd been paged into surgery, and it ended up taking forever. I headed back to the nurse's desk to finish up some charting.

Checking my phone, I saw a message from Nicki, and my heart sank. I felt a wave of panic as I read it.

Baby🤰🏾: Come back to my house!!!
Baby🤰🏾: You got me so fucked up, Beyonce!
Baby🤰🏾: now you can't answer??? (9:05 P.M.)
Baby🤰🏾: nvm (10:30 P.M.)
Baby🤰🏾: I don't want you around me or Amora, anymore.

"You okay?" Lena asked me. I couldn't hear her through my heart breaking, fuck! Amora must've said something.

I was going to tell her today, but I got paged to come in.

Lena snapped her fingers, "Dr. Knowles?"

"Oh, um... y-yeah, I'm fine," I said. I finished the chart and handed it to the nurse. Lena grabbed her things, and we both started heading out at the same time.

"See you Monday, or if we get paged again," she said with a laugh, and I gave a sad chuckle.

"See you, drive safe"

I sat in my car and tried calling Nicki, but it went straight to voicemail after just one ring. I frowned and called again, but it did the same thing. My heart was racing. What was going on?

: Baby, answer me!
: I'm coming now.

I noticed my phone went to green, did she block me?

I put the car in drive and headed towards Nicki's house. It was late, but I had a key, so I could get in. My heart was racing as I approached.

Ten minutes later, I pulled into her driveway, turned off the car, and sat there for a moment, trying to steady my nerves before going inside.

The house was dimly lit, with a candle flickering on the kitchen counter. I walked up and peeked into Amora's room. She was sleeping soundly. I walked in and gently kissed her forehead.

She stirred a little, mumbling, "Mama?"

I whispered, "Shh, go back to sleep, baby." I rubbed her cheek softly, smiled, and then left her room.

I felt a knot in my stomach as I headed towards Nicki's room. She wasn't in bed. I noticed the bathroom light on, and then heard the toilet flush.

Anxiety crept up on me. When she finally emerged, she looked exhausted and pained, her face flushed with anger.

"Get the fuck out of my house," she said, her voice tight.

I took a step closer. "Nicki, what's wrong?" I asked softly.
