Trishalini POV

"You should eat now, Maharani," Meenakshi's voice caught my attention as I laid both the babies in the cradle and tied my hair in a bun.

"Just a little. I am exhausted," I said, and she plated dinner before me.

My heart was sinking low. I did not feel right. I could not help but look at the babies again and again.

"Ashwin is not back yet, right?" I asked, and she nodded and placed a chapati on the plate for me.

"What happened?" she asked, and I shook my head.

"Nothing. It's just that something does not feel right," I said, and she smiled.

"You must be overthinking," she said, and I nodded.

Maybe I was overthinking.

But the night was not safe. The commanders-in-chief were outside, and more than half of the soldiers were handling the riots.

Something was off.

Everything was fine a week ago.

How come all of a sudden riots happened?

Why were people so desperate to meet the King when he was at his lowest?

They were our people, and they should understand.

"Meenakshi," I called her and looked up.

"Can you ask the spies to find out where Maharaj went today?" I asked, and she knit her brows in confusion.

"But, Maharani, in the middle of the night. It's past midnight, and you have not eaten anything," she said, and I shook my head.

"You do not understand. It feels like someone is planning something against us. Also, riots are to distract the soldiers and commanders. But why?" I asked, and she stared blankly at me.

"You are overthinking, Maharani," she said again, and I inhaled deeply, chuckling.

"Maybe," I muttered and tore a bite of food.

But, my heart was not settling down. I ate a chapati and washed my hands to sleep for a while.

The doors were closed, Meenakshi had left for her servant quarters, and the babies were sleeping soundly.

Suddenly, the slight noise of the jug clattering against the floor woke me from my already disturbing sleep.

Why did I feel so uneasy?

The darkness made me thin my eyes, and I immediately stepped down from the bed to walk to the babies' cradle.

Both of them were sleeping peacefully, and seeing it, a smile appeared on my face.

But the faded noise of footsteps running outside made me look at the door.

My hands sweated up, and suddenly, a scream filled my ear, and my heart sank deeper.

The door of my chamber pushed open, and the soldiers standing outside my chamber fell in with the blood whooping out from their slit necks.

I felt nauseous all of a sudden. But before I could react, I noticed a tall, muscular man stepping in with a sword in his hand.

My feet stumbled, and I immediately took a few steps back to the table.

"Who are you?" I asked, raising my voice enough to alert more of the soldiers.
