Chapter 23 - Nice To Meet You, Mr. and Mrs. Robins...
"Say what?"I turned to blink slowly at Dan who was standing in my bedroom doorway with his arms crossed over his chest, his eyebrow raised.
After Dan had bandaged up my injuries, I had received a call from work, asking how I was and where I was. I'd told them that I was home, and they'd told me to take it easy for the week. Thankfully, Lydia was away, so my secret was safe. For now.
I felt like an irresponsible, disloyal person who couldn't hold a job. So, I'd spent the next hour moping in my bedroom, until Dan had barged in.
"I'm serious, Angie," he said, and his tone was serious. "You said you would come."
"But today?" I asked incredulously. He couldn't have chose a better moment.
"No, not today. Tomorrow. Any day this week. But I need to get over this, and I need you with me to do it. Don't say no, please don't."
I twisted around in my chair so I was facing him. "I'm not saying no, but...it's so sudden."
"I told you about it a few days ago - "
"Not for me," I interrupted, furrowing my eyebrows. "For your parents. Won't they, I don't know, freak when they see you on their doorstep on a random Tuesday?"
Dan exhaled, as if he were growing impatient. I didn't see why; I was only asking for his sake, my sake and even his parents sake. "I'm not going to call them."
"So...it's a surprise attack?"
"Yeah. Sure. Whatever works." The idea of spending a minute in his own house seemed to tick him off. I'd never really seen him so...miff about anything.
"Well...I guess it's settled then. We'll go, tomorrow, if it makes you happy." I cringed and regretted adding that last part when he glared at me.
"I'm anything but happy," was his gritted response.
"Yeah. I know."
"Start packing," he said and stalked off. I watched him, his shoulders tense and back stiff, and turned back around in my seat. This was really affecting him. I tried to imagine us sitting at the dinner table, trying to eat a proper dinner before World War Three broke out, but the image was too...unpleasant.
So, I followed his order, and started packing my backpack. I shoved a couple of T-shirts and jeans inside, with my pajamas (not the Tweety bird ones), toothbrush, toothpaste, face cloth, slippers, and other toiletry items.
My bag was overloaded and looked like a gigantic dinosaur egg. I wasn't even sure how many days we were going to stay. Would I need to pack more or less?
Dan decided to skip dinner. I wasn't surprised.
I made myself a sandwich and ate it while reading a magazine in the living room. When I was halfway done, my cellphone rang. "Hello?" I answered.
"Angelina?" It was Jacob.
I smiled. "Hey Jacob. What're you doing?"
There was small bell sound. "Closing up the store. Um...look, Angelina, are you busy right now?"
I helplessly looked down at my sandwich and magazine and sighed. "Not at all. Is something...wrong?" I grew a little panicky. He didn't sound mad or anything, but...
"No, nothing's wrong. I just want to talk you. Unless you don't want to, because I understand."
"Of course not, I'll be right there. Just wait for me in front of the store."
