Chapter 31 - It's A Night Full Of Surprises

The next morning seemed to be pretty hectic for Miranda and Conner. When Dan and I had headed up there, Miranda had been pacing around while screaming over the phone.

It wasn't a very good morning for Dan or me either. After I'd shouted at him last night, it had been a silent morning for us. Neither of us had spoken during breakfast or when we'd headed up to 707.

I didn't know why it bothered me so much, hearing him talk to Wendy. It's not like they were face to face, anyway. It shouldn't have mattered to me.

"What time does the party start?" I asked Conner after he hung up the phone.

He sighed, overwhelmed. "Six in the evening. There's still plenty of time."

"Dan!" Miranda wailed, putting on her best puppy dog face. "Could you do me a big favour?"

Dan rolled his eyes at her. "You don't need to put on the weird face. I'll do whatever you want me to."

Miranda smiled, relieved. "Thanks, Dan. I just need you to pick up my dress, if you don't mind. It's somewhere downtown and there's no way I'll have time to go to the banquet and back there..."

"It's fine," he said reassuringly. "Which store is it?"

While Miranda wrote down the address for Dan on a scrap paper, I fluttered to Conner's side, feeling useless. "Can I help with something?" I asked, feeling like a child.

"No, I think we're fine, love," he said, jotting down a few phone numbers onto a calendar that hung over the wall. "But thank you."

"Are you sure?" I insisted, watching Dan and Miranda chattering. She seemed awfully close to him nowadays, like they were a couple...

I shook my head. Dan couldn't be her boyfriend or any girl's boyfriend for that matter: I had to remind myself that he was queer.

Conner smiled at me, a genuine smile. "Would you like to come with me to finish a few errands?"

I blinked, thrown. "Um...like where?"

"Just the bakery to pick up the pastries, the florist to get flowers to match Miranda's dress, and the banquet hall to check on everything?" he asked, the smile remaining on his face.

A day out with Conner? Well, hell. How bad could it be? "Okay," I agreed. "I'll come."

"Great. We're leaving now, so let's go." He grabbed his car keys from the kitchen counter and guided me into the living room where Miranda and Dan were. "Miranda?" he asked.

Miranda glanced our way. "What's up, Connie?" she asked, looking slightly worried.

"I'll be heading out with Angelina to finish the rest of the errands," he said, his hand still lingering on the small of my back.

Dan raised an eyebrow but didn't say anything. Miranda nodded, waving her hand dismissively. "But be back before four o'clock, Conner."

Conner nodded and smiled down at me again. "Well then, come on."

I rolled my eyes. "I swear if you try luring me into a dark alley," I said, "to rape me, you might as well say goodbye to Miranda forever."

He chuckled. "Still crack me up every time, love."

I scowled. "Don't call me that!"

Saying goodbye to Miranda and Dan, Conner and I headed down to the garage where an unfamiliar black Mercedes convertible was waiting. "Since when have you had this car?" I asked him in awe.
