Chapter 33 - What's The Big News?
You know when you're in complete shock and can't move a muscle? When you're stuck on the ground, entirely frozen head down to toe? That was the third time I experienced that feeling. The first time when Dan had kissed me, the second time when Conner had kissed me and now, as I watched Dan and Wendy standing beneath the streetlamp.
Why am I still standing here? I asked myself, taking a shaky step back. With one last look at them, I turned around, getting ready to catch the next bus.
And I regret not moving fast enough, because a second later, I heard Wendy shout my name. "Angelina!" she called. "Angelina? Where are you going?"
I considered ignoring her, but decided that her voice would only get louder. My pulse quickened as I turned around again, feeling bare and exposed.
Wendy was waving her petite hand at me and Dan was watching me, still leaning against the streetlamp.
Damn him. I hesitantly waved back, but before I could walk away again, Wendy was gesturing me over. Sighing heavily, I took small steps towards them, trying to keep my face in a smile instead of a angry glare.
"I like your dress," Wendy told me when I'd approached. She was wearing a black blazer over a fitting beige dress that hugged her body very nicely. She looked effortlessly beautiful.
"Thank you," I said, my voice hoarse and I cleared my throat. Involuntarily, my eyes drifted to Dan and I was startled to find him studying me in a very intense way. I darted my eyes away, warmth rushing to my cheeks.
"Where were you going?" Wendy asked me curiously.
Ugh. I wanted to say some sort of nasty remark but decided that was too rude. She hadn't even done anything wrong. "My friend's house," I answered honestly, my tone bitter and morose.
"So late?"
"I'm sleeping over."
"Oh, I guess that makes sense." Even her laugh sounded like wind chimes. "Well, then....I guess I better go." She smiled at me. "Bye Angelina. It was amazing meeting you."
I raised my eyebrows when she leaned over and gave me a quick but firm hug. I hesitantly hugged her back, though I had no clue why she was hugging me out of the blue.
When she released me, she faced Dan. Once again, I was startled to find Dan's sharp gaze on me as his eyes pierced through mine. "Well Dan," Wendy spoke, her voice soft. "I guess I'll call you sometime."
Dan finally averted his eyes to Wendy and nodded slowly. "Yeah."
Wendy smiled slightly, but pursed her lips. I could see tears forming in her eyes, and without warning, she threw her arms around Dan, hugging him for dear life.
Unlike me, Dan didn't even look shocked. Instead, he wound his arms around her, pressing her tightly and firmly against him.
I suddenly felt even angrier at him than I already was. Did he call me here just so I could see that? He could just go ahead, kiss me and then hug his ex-girlfriend right in front of me?
Wendy pulled back, quickly wiped her eyes and smiled once last time. "I'm glad I got to see you, Dan."
Dan nodded, looking wary while I stood there, perplexed. "At least I said bye to you this time," he said quietly, speaking for the first time.
Wendy nodded. "Bye guys." She waved and then turned, walking off the opposite way in her high wedged heels.
I watched her, unable to meet Dan's eyes. What had that been all about? And who knew a simple goodbye had to be so emotional? He'd probably see her tomorrow, anyways...
