Chapter 30 - We Didn't Even Say Bye...
"So, are you ready for the party?" I asked Dan as I pulled the waist strings on my sweatpants tightly together so it wouldn't fall down. "It's tomorrow, you know."Dan sighed, flipping the page of the book he was reading. "Yeah, I know. And I guess. This week has been so...hectic."
"It has," I agreed, studying him. I guess I felt bad for him, since everything had mostly been about him. Going to his parents house and somehow surviving, being caught as Miranda Dalton's husband and attending her interview. And now there was the party to go to tomorrow, which hopefully, would run smoothly.
His mouth quirked up in the corner. "But you were there with me the whole time, so I guess it wasn't too bad."
I looked down at my hands. "You have a pretty crazy life, you know?" I told him without looking up. "Family problems, ex-girlfriend problems, celebrity problems...it's almost fun. My life seems so boring compared to yours. The main highlights of my summer so far mostly involve...you."
"Your life isn't boring," Dan said quietly. "It's normal, something I wish my life was."
"Yeah, but for the past seventeen years, all I've ever done is study. I remember when I first met you in the lobby, you told me you didn't like girls who study all their life."
"Yeah, but - " he started hesitantly.
"And I want to prove myself wrong. To show myself that I can have a summer of fun, impossible as it sounds. I don't want to be a boring person."
"And you're not," he objected. "Angie, the minute you stepped on my foot the first time we met, I knew that you wouldn't be a person who would bore me. And I was right. You entertain me, you make me laugh, you do crazy things no girl has ever done. And sometimes, you just say the stupidest or most surprising things ever..." He trailed off. "All I'm saying is that you make me happy and that you're the funniest person I've ever met so far."
"But - "
"But what?" he asked softly and when I finally looked up, he was smiling at me. His smile wasn't his usual cocky or sexy smile; this one made me feel special, like we were the only two people in the world at the moment. "I told you, didn't I? I'll help you reach your goal and make this summer the best summer ever, full of nonstop fun."
And I remembered those words, the same exact words he'd said to me a few weeks back when we'd first met. "You already have," I said, slightly blushing.
His smile widened. "It's a start then."
I raised an eyebrow. "A start?"
Going to parties, nearly being molested, spending the night over at a celebrity's house, meeting an ex-girlfriend, going rock-climbing, and being on a live interview - that was all just a start?
Dan nodded. "Yeah. It's only July, just two more days until August. We still have an entire month left until school starts." He bent forward and took my hand in his. "That's enough time to make the best of it."
My eyes met his, and we just stared at each other for a few moments. Embarrassed, I finally broke gazes with him and lowered my eyes. "Yeah, I guess it is."
There a moment of awkward silence and then Dan said, "Hey, shouldn't you call Jo and ask if she has a dress for the party? I mean, she was invited, right?"
Realization sunk in. "You're right," I gasped. "And it's last minute, too! Oh Lord, how could I be so stupid?"
Dan hid his smile. "Jeez, I don't know."
