Chapter 49 - I'm Going To University!
"You look abnormally happy today," Jo remarked, sending me a confused smile. "I'm suspecting something good happened last night."
I reached for my lemonade and took a sip, trying to fight my laughter. "I guess you could say that," I said, half shrugging.
Jo searched my face and shrugged as well. "As long as you're happy. Even if it's a little creepy."
"How is my happiness creepy?" I protested.
"You keep smiling to yourself like a creeper."
Dammit, I thought, sipping at my lemonade again. I'm turning into a pervert, too. What has done Dan to me?
The memories from last night made me want to blush and hysterically giggle at the same time, but I fought them both back.
Jo would definitely suspect something and that was the last thing I wanted - for now, I'd drown in my own happiness without any interrogations.
"Did Dan have work today?" Jo asked, stirring her coffee.
I nodded, pulling my phone out as it vibrated in my pocket. "Nine until five. Hold on Jo, while I answer this." I turned a little in my seat, away from Jo. "Hello?"
It was my mother. "Angelina, honey?" she asked, sounding thrilled. "I'm so glad you answered."
"Of course I did," I said, raising an eyebrow. "Hi Mom."
"Hi sweetie. Alright, the reason I'm calling is because today is a special event."
Uh-oh, I thought in alarm, wondering if it was her birthday. Couldn't be, it was August 19th; her birthday was February ninth. So what could be this "special event?" Was it Dad's birth -
"Tonight, our company is having an open gala," my mother exclaimed, absolutely excited. I exhaled in relief; that was all. "It starts at six tonight and I was wondering if you are free tonight so you can attend. I'd love if you came, sweetheart."
I smiled. "Of course I'll come, Mom," I agreed. "I wouldn't miss it for the world. Where is it?"
She told me the address and borrowing a pen and paper from Jo, I jotted it down. "Hey Mom, is it okay if Dan comes, too?"
My mother hesitated and finally said, "Yes, of course he can. I'd enjoy if he came as well." I could hear the feeble smile in her voice which made me smile wider.
"Thanks, Mom. I love you."
"I love you, too, sweetie. Call me when you and Dan are about to leave. See you soon."
"Bye." I hung up and faced Jo again; I noticed she was ogling one of the employees. I couldn't blame her; he was pretty cute with his sandy blonde hair. Somehow, he reminded me of Jacob, all innocent and charming. "Are you done staring?"
Jo blinked and blushed, covering her cheeks. "I - I wasn't staring at him," she objected. "I was just checking the time."
I grinned. "I never did say you were staring at him," I teased, laughing. "Come on Miss Flirty Pants, let's go."
On our way back to the apartment, I was surprised to bump into John Cutler. I hadn't seen him in...well, almost forever. "Hello, Mr. Cutler," I greeted him and he smiled warmly.
"Hello Angelina," he said and I was pleased he remembered my name. "Ah, Angelina, a package arrived this morning for you. I told Sarah to hold it for you until you came back."
