Picture of Wendy and Dan on the side :P
Chapter 17 - Do You Still Love Her?
Wendy sat in the back, nobody saying a single word as Dan silently drove. I wasn't sure if he was taking Wendy to our apartment, but I hoped not. When he had first said her name, something had clicked and my eyes widened, an uncomfortable feeling growing in me. His ex girlfriend. This couldn't just be a coincidence.
Wendy sat quietly, not uttering a word until Dan sighed.
"You didn't call me," she finally said softly.
"I didn't need to call you," Dan answered, and his knuckles tightened on the steering wheel, his gaze intently set on the road ahead of him.
"Dan," Wendy pleaded. "You should have called me. You misunderstood."
"You told me everything clearly on the phone that night. I didn't misunderstand anything."
I remembered that morning a few weeks ago, when I asked Dan about his ex girlfriend. I asked if he missed her and he said he didn't. Glancing at him, I assumed he had been honest. He looked intense, no signs of care in his eyes.
I looked at Wendy in the rear-view mirror and once again, she looked like she was on the verge of tears. I felt like an intruder, just sitting there, listening to their conversation, which sounded more and more like an argument.
"Why are you mad at me?" Wendy asked, her voice pained.
"I'm not." Dan didn't seem to acknowledge the fact that she was going to break down soon. "You did what was best."
"You know I didn't choose to go," she said. "It was my parents."
"So you're saying your parents told you to break up with me and get together with some other guy?"
"I didn't think you'd care Dan!"
"Bullshit."
"No, Dan, you and me....I knew we would never see each other again. At least that's what I believed. And....I missed you, I missed you more than anything. I gave you a chance to start over."
"Even if I didn't want to start over?"
"I told you to call me. I told you, but you didn't listen. I could have explained everything."
"Just save it. I'm not the one to blame."
"I know, I am. It's all my fault, but Dan....please, let me explain. I never intended to hurt you and to be honest, I never did plan to break up with you."
"If you're going to keep lying to me - "
"I'm not lying!" Wendy cried, and sure enough, she was crying. Tears ran down her cheeks. "God, what will it take? Just one explanation, Dan? That's all I'm asking."
Dan didn't say anything. "One explanation," he finally answered, his voice tight and strained. "That's all."
"Okay." Wendy sniffled, wiping her eyes. "Dan....I missed you. I still love you."
Somehow, hearing this, my heart twisted. I wasn't sure why, but Dan didn't answer. He continued to stare at the road disdainfully, still gripping onto the steering wheel.
There was a long pause and I stared out the window, unsure of what to do. I had trouble even moving a muscle because I felt so awkward.
"Sorry Angie," Dan suddenly said, startling me. "I didn't mean to...."
