Chapter 44 – It’s A Town Full Of Criminals!
Drip. Drop. Drip. Drop.I stared out the window relentlessly, watching the raindrops patter against the window. People scattered among the streets, their umbrellas drawn above their heads as they scurried away. Two raindrops slid against the window, racing down to the bottom. I wondered which one would win.
Before I could look down and see which drop had won, I heard Miranda’s voice from behind me.
“Dan, why are you leaving?” she wailed, trailing behind Dan as he rolled his suitcase towards the front door.
I gave them an uninterested look before turning around on the sofa, looking scornfully out the window again. It was raining heavily, the windows blurry with rain water. I thought that might have stopped Dan from leaving today, but he was persistent.
“I told you Miranda, I have things to take care of at home,” Dan told her, exasperation clear in his voice. He had already told her twice, but she was still whining about his departure.
Miranda sulked. “But this is your home.”
Dan didn’t respond and I hugged my knees to my chest. This sucks, I thought, feeling annoyed with myself. If only I hadn’t told him to leave...
“Angelina?” I heard Jacob call and with a sigh, I twisted my body forward.
Jacob came into the living room and with a sympathetic smile, he sat down beside me. “Are you alright?” he asked quietly.
“Yeah,” I said, though it wasn’t quite a lie. Yet it wasn’t the truth either. “Where are Michael and Conner?”
Jacob shrugged and patted my shoulder reassuringly. “It’ll be fine,” he promised. “Dan and you can still maintain your relationship, right? It’s not as if you’re breaking up just because he’s leaving.”
“I know,” I sighed. “I know, Jacob.”
“Cheer up.” He gave me one last smile before rising and sauntering away. My eyes flickered to the front door where Dan was still talking to Miranda. She had her hands coiled around his arm, looking up at him adorningly.
I see a green eyed monster, a voice taunted inside my head and I growled beneath my breath. Why should I have felt jealous? Just because Miranda was touching my boyfriend?
I saw Dan’s eyes drift towards me and quickly, I looked the other way. I wasn’t exactly angry with him, because it wasn’t his fault at all. I was the one who had told him to leave and he had to stay with his father. But I still couldn’t help but feel irritation towards everything around me.
“Ready to leave?” Conner asked loudly, strolling out from the kitchen, a glass of water in his hand. “It’s almost three o’clock.”
Dan nodded. “Yeah, I should leave now.”
I scowled for no apparent reason and stood up from the sofa, slithering away. I paused in front of Dan’s room and peered inside. It seemed empty, though the furniture was still inside. His bed sheets were gone, his laptop – which had always been resting on his desk – was also gone. I knew that behind the closet door, all his clothes had been folded and packed away as well.
But one thing caught my eye. His cell phone was still on the bare bed, almost completely forgotten and abandoned. What an idiot, I thought to myself, walking towards the bed and picking it up.
When I headed back to the front door, I saw Jacob and Michael rolling down two suitcases, one in each hand. Conner trailed behind them, in case they needed help and I was just in time to see Miranda throw her arms around Dan. “Oh, bye Dan! I’ll miss you so much!” she cried. “You have to come visit us!”
