Chapter 48 – Keep Things Rated PG 13
“Now that I think about it,” Dan said, “Conner’s plan sounds like the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.”
I peered behind his shoulder, in case Conner could hear him. I spotted him lingering by the rest room with Miranda at his side; her chattering was so noisy, I could hear it from where I sat. “It’s not that bad of a plan,” I objected. “At least it’ll drive Jackson away.”
“I hope,” he sighed, leaning back at the chair. I studied him as he wandered off into space; his hair had grown slightly longer in the month, curling over his ears and strands in the front falling into his eyes. Instead of being laid-back as usual, he seemed tense and tapped his fingers over the table, his eyes distant, in another world.
My eyes drifted to the café door and suddenly, through the open glass, I saw a familiar face. I sat upright immediately, quickly shaking Dan’s arm. “Jackson is here!”
He sat straight as well just as the café doors opened and the devil appeared. Just seeing him again made me scowl and I frowned down at the table. I couldn’t stop thinking about his previous words: He was gay. Still is.
Dan wasn’t gay. He was bisexual; he had even said so, hadn’t he? I didn’t know anymore. I didn’t want to think about it.
Jackson had a wry smile as he approached our table, completely oblivious to the tension. “Hello Dan, Angelina.” He didn’t even spare me a glance and watched Dan as he sat.
“Hey,” Dan said, averting his eyes. “If you’re wondering why I called you here again, it’s because I think we got off to a bad start. Your sudden re-appearance had me surprised and...” He trailed off awkwardly.
Jackson nodded. “I guess it was unexpected. Especially since I came back to you having a girlfriend.”
The tension was slowly building up like a castle of Lego blocks, but I remained silent just as Dan had instructed me to. If I spoke now, there was a chance I might mess the plan up.
Speaking of the plan.
In that moment, I saw Conner striding out from behind the wall in the corner of my eye, a foam cup of coffee in his hand, his eyes set on us. He caught my eye and gave a reassuring smile before approaching us boldly. Jackson and Dan both looked up and almost immediately, I saw Dan relax.
“Hi,” Dan said. “Can we help you?”
Conner’s eyes narrowed. “Wait. I remember you.”
Dan raised an eyebrow. “I beg your pardon?”
Conner slammed his cup down on the table; I bit my lip to keep my straight, shocked face on. “Don’t you remember me? We met at that party, Janet’s party.”
