Chapter 19 - Spending Time With Angie? (Part 2)
I sighed. "I'm going to die if I go rock climbing," I told Dan honestly.
He patted my shoulder. "You won't, Angie. You can do everything, right?"
"Who told you that?" I grumbled and he chuckled.
"Last time I checked, those words came flying out from your mouth. Don't tell me you're gonna chicken out," he said in mock horror, gaping at me.
I clenched my fist. "Let's do this!" I said firmly and with a grin, he squeezed my shoulder reassuringly. We headed to the rock-climbing center, where kids to adults learned to rock-climb.
The woman greeted us, adjusting her helmet. "Hey there! Y'all ready to go do some rock-climbing?"
"You bet," I agreed enthusiastically, smiling at her widely.
She smiled back. "Okay then! We have the beginners area, the intermediates and the advanced group. Which do you two fit in?"
Dan glanced at me. "I think we should head to beg - " he started, but I raised my hand, cutting him off.
"Advanced," I said confidently. I glanced back at him, managing a tight smile. "You said I could do anything, right?"
He looked uncertain. "I don't know about that anymore...."
"Don't chicken out," I reminded him.
"I'm not scared, I've been rock-climbing before. I'm just worried about you, Angie." His eyes glimmered and he did in fact looked concerned.
I rolled my eyes. "Excuses, excuses Dan." I looked back at the smiling woman. "Advanced."
"Y'all sure?" she asked.
"Yup."
She showed us to the equipment room and she helped me find the things I needed, like the right helmet and the right harness. Dan seemed perfectly fine by himself, and within minutes, we were both ready to climb some rocks!
But I could feel my breakfast coming back up when I stared up at the wall. It was high, very very high. Nothing like I'd imagined. It'd take me at least a year!
Dan seemed to notice my hesitation and smirked. "Beginners?"
I glared. "No way! I can so do this! This looks easy." Yeah right....
The woman secured my buckles and pulleys and straps, and all the other things that made my head go dizzy. Once again, Dan seemed to be doing fine on his own. Finally, I was safely secured and ready to climb some rocks.
"Remember, if you get nervous or you can't go further, either shout down or tug the rope hard. We'll make sure your back on the ground safely," the woman told us.
Dan and I nodded and with a smile, the woman walked away to help the other people around us. I heard a shriek in the distance and tensed.
It didn't look easy, not at all. But I wasn't going to chicken out.
"Ready Angie?" Dan asked me. "Don't be scared." He reached out for my hand and gave it a gentle squeeze which caused my heart to throw a panic. "I'll be there with you."
Shakily, I pulled my hand away, my face flushing. "Yeah, yeah whatever. Just don't make me fall or do anything stupid."
I'm sure he could have answered in a million ways, but I was glad he was holding it back. Well, sort of. I could tell he wanted to laugh at me, the way he looked away.
"Let's go," I announced.
Dan grinned. "Alrighty."
I grabbed the first rock in sight and lifted my foot onto the closest one above ground level. Grabbing another rock, I lifted my other leg. It wasn't hard, it was actually lots of fun.
