[Luna's POV]
It had been two days since I left the castle, and the emotional whirlwind had yet to settle. I hadn't spoken to Darius since that night when everything seemed to crumble beneath my feet. But staying here with my parents, talking to Trent and Lydia, had helped calm the storm raging inside me.
Lydia, as always, had been the voice of reason. "You can't let Rayne win," she'd said. "You can't let her scheme push you away from Darius. It's not his fault."
Trent, ever the overprotective brother, had been less forgiving. "I told you that Rayne was trouble the moment she showed up. If Darius can't see it, then maybe he doesn't deserve you."
My parents had been more neutral, letting me vent and offering their support without pushing me one way or another. But I knew in my heart that Lydia was right. It wasn't Darius's fault. I had overreacted, letting my jealousy and insecurity get the better of me. Darius had always been loyal, always tried to make me feel safe. I had to trust him.
After two long days of reflection, I made a decision. I needed to apologize for storming out the way I did, for doubting him. I wasn't going to let Rayne's petty schemes tear us apart. I had to be strong, for myself and for Darius.
I decided that the best way to show him I wanted to make things right was by doing something simple but thoughtful. I'd go over to the castle the next morning and make him breakfast in bed. It was a gesture to show that I was willing to move past this. I wanted to mend things between us.
The early morning sun filtered through the trees as I made my way back to the castle. My nerves fluttered in my stomach as I thought about seeing Darius again. The kitchen staff greeted me kindly, and I told them I wanted to prepare a special breakfast for Darius. They smiled and offered help, but I insisted on doing it myself. It was a small gesture, but I wanted it to come from me.
[Rayne's POV]
I had been waiting for this moment. When I saw Luna walking up to the castle with that ridiculous tray of food, I knew it was the perfect opportunity. She thought she could just come back and make things better with a smile and breakfast? Pathetic.
The night before, I'd carefully planted the seeds for my plan. Darius, as usual, had no clue. I waited until he was fast asleep and then snuck into his room, slipping into bed beside him like it was the most natural thing in the world. I knew Luna would be coming soon; I could feel it.
I heard the door creak open and the sound of her gasp. Perfect. My eyes remained closed, but I felt her devastation hit like a shockwave. The sound of plates shattering against the floor was the sweetest music to my ears. Everything was falling into place, just as I had planned.
As Darius stirred and realized what was happening, I could almost feel the confusion and guilt settling in. I kept my breathing steady, playing the innocent act. Let him try to explain this one away. Let Luna see what happens when she gets too comfortable, too sure of her place in his life.
She wouldn't stand a chance.
[Luna's POV]
After about thirty minutes, I had everything ready: a tray with pancakes, eggs, bacon, and a fresh pot of coffee. I couldn't help but smile as I imagined the surprised look on Darius's face. Maybe this would be the start of mending what had been broken.
Balancing the tray carefully, I headed up the stairs towards his room. My heart raced with anticipation. When I reached the door, it was ajar, the faintest whisper of movement coming from inside. I nudged the door open with my shoulder, excitement bubbling up inside me.
But when I stepped inside, everything stopped.
There, lying next to Darius in bed, was Rayne.
My heart dropped into my stomach, the tray slipping from my hands. The sound of smashing plates echoed through the room, but I barely registered it. My eyes were glued to the sight of Rayne curled up beside him, a satisfied smirk playing on her lips.
