["iPad"]"Well I gotta hit the sack, big Saturday tomorrow." My dad exclaims as he clears the last of the dishes away from the table.
"That's right it's somebody's birthday." My mother kiss my father as he emerges out of the kitchen.
"Not just that, the iPad comes out, on my actual birthday." My dad cheers as I let out a small laugh while I shove a piece of pasta into my mouth.
"What a coincidence?" I chuckle.
"It's like Steve Jobs and God got together and said I love you Phil." My father leans his hand against the kitchen counter as he stares off into the distance.
"That's wishful thinking Dad." I tilt my head.
"Not wishful. Fact. Gotta load up the beach chair in the trunk for like in the morning."
"Wait honey, you can't spend your birthday waiting in line, let me do it, that way on your birthday you get to wake up and have your brand new toy..." My mother stops his tracks.
"Okay, well in spite of you calling it a toy this is shaping up to be the best birthday ever." My father proudly speaks as I grit my teeth watching him walk out of the kitchen.
"Oh thank god we didn't have to hear that stupid story..." At the moment my father walks back into the kitchen.
"It was called the Fun Zone. I was 11. I hit 10 straight fast balls in the batting cage, my best friend took one in the groin, I yelled out ball two, that's when I knew I was funny." I sigh as I relive the story for the hundredth time.
"Inspirational Dad." I speak quietly.
"Good night family." My dad speaks before finally heading up stairs. Halfway up I hear his stumbles before his famous words.
"Gotta fix that step..." I smirk to the ceiling.
The next morning me and my siblings are within the kitchen cooking Dad his favourite breakfast, pancakes and strawberries like the average 40 year olds.
"Wait here he comes, the birthday boy..." I exclaim as my Dad enters the room.
"Happy Birthday." Me and my siblings sing in unison.
"Thank you guys, oh my favourite, you guys are the best. Who are these from?" He notices the balloons placed near the living room.
"Jack, you just missed him dropped them off about ten minutes ago. He told me to say happy birthday." I explain while flipping one of the pancakes over.
"Oh he knows what I like." My dad speak placing his hands on his hips.
"Where's Mom?" Luke asks.
"You mean the greatest woman in the world? She is standing in line at the Apple Store making all of my birthday wishes come true." I smile and hug the side of my dad's body.
A few hours later I hear squabbling within the hallway and closer examination it turns out to be my parents.
"What's going on? Oo where's the iPad?" I speak in a cheeky tone as my dad death stare lingers on me.
"Oh no." I look towards my mom who has a look of guilt spread across her face.
"I'm going to a place where birthdays still mean something." My dad storms out of the door as I look towards my mother.
"What happened? Didn't you get up at like 5 in the morning for that thing." I tilt my head.
"I did but then I came downstairs and stupidly fell asleep on the sofa." She shamefully admits as I sigh.
"Could you just do me a favour and spare me and lecture and text Jack to see if him or any of his friends have got a hold off one yet?" She grits her teeth.
"I mean I can try but I'm not making any promises Mom." I explain before heading off into the kitchen.
"Luke stop inhaling the balloons!" I snatch the balloon out of his hand and place down on the counter.
"I'm not inhaling them!" He speaks in a high pitch.
"Stop lying." I fling the balloon into his face as I walk out of the room.
That evening all the family are gathered at the house to celebrate my dad's birthday, however the main person that is missing is the birthday boy himself.
"Hey you want another drink?" I ask Jack.
"Oh no gotta get through this one first. Where did the balloons go?" He points towards his present as I rolls my head back.
"One word. Luke." I take a quick sip of my drink as Jack releases a sigh himself.
"If I lose I burn this house down!" Gloria shouts over by the living room as me and Jack both head over to see what's going on.
"Nobody's burning any houses down under my watch. What's going on?" I sit on that arm chair beside my Grandfather staring at the chess set in front of us.
"Just a little friendly game of chess." My grandfather explains as I let out a little chuckle.
"Look at us. Whoever loses this game is gonna feel lousy, what's the point?" My grandfather speaks as Gloria wipes the chess board clean.
"Yeah, just leave my birthday present on the floor..." My father speaks emotionless in the background as I gaze in his direction.
"There you are Dad. Your cake fell but Uncle Cam is trying to fix it now." I inform him as he produces a small smile.
"He won't." I smiles and carries on towards the kitchen as I look questionably over to Jack who shrugs his shoulders.
"Who wants some cake?" Later on my mother enters with the iPad within her hands, at the sight of it I grab onto Jacks arms and smile uncontrollably knowing my Dad is gonna love it.
"Oh my god, you got it!" My dad shouts as he runs over towards her.
"You wanna blow out the candles?" My dad blows as we all cheer around him.
"Oh my god it did not just do that, who's ready for the first day of their lives?" He proudly shows off his new toy while we are laugh and smile around him.
"Happy Birthday Phil." Jack speaks from the side of me.
"Thank you guys." My father replies happy.
"Happy Birthday Dad." I clench onto his free arm as he plants a kiss in the middle of my forehead.
