["Family Portrait"]

"Well make sure you remember to the family portrait my mom has scheduled later this afternoon." I speak into speaker phone while reversing my car into the driveway.

"I won't don't worry. I don't want to Claire to kill me." Jack snarls down the line as I let out a little chuckle.

I'm glad my mom decided to let Jack join in the portrait. I say like that it was my idea, it was hers. When my dad found out he had the amazing idea of dressing up like Batman and Robin. That didn't go down to well with Mom. He had to sleep on the couch for a week.

My mother is a perfectionist. Sometimes in comes in handy, other times it doesn't. Especially when she over obsesses about one little thing.

"Okay, good. I'll see you then." I end while I disembark car and head inside finding my mother stood staring the staircase.

Thinking nothing of it, I try to slowly sneak, however she doesn't move.

"Erm, Mom, what's wrong?" I tilt my head and lean my hands upon the stair case.

"That broken step. It's gonna ruin our whole family portrait." My mother states.

"I don't see anything Mom." I glance over.

"So I'm crazy..." She scoffs looking in my direction for the first time since I entered.

"No... you're not..."

"Your Father was supposed to fix that step." She huffs.

"Yeah he said that last week when he fell down carrying two suitcases at once... he always blames the step." I scoff peering upon it.

"I just want this picture to be perfect honey." My mother gazes over to me and I let out a little sigh.

"Motherhood just goes by so quickly, in a minute, Luke is gonna be shaving, Alex is gonna be off at college, you're going to be moving out and getting married and Hayley... is going to be doing something great." My mother taps my hands.

"Oh Mom. That's so sweet, you know I'm gonna miss it here, at home..." Before I can continue my heartfelt speech my mother buts in.

"Screw it. I'm gonna fix the bastard. If your Father can do it, I can, right." I produce a death stare as she head up the stairs.

"Alright. I just need to lift..." As soon as she touches the step the full hardwood fixture flies up in the air leaving her sat staring at the bare step.

"Oh now I see it." I chuckle under my breath.

A little later I am resting on the couch in the living room scrolling through a magazine when my mother barges in.
