I woke up and then sank back down into the covers again. Sunday had gone by quickly without Kayla or Isaac making an appearance but now it was Monday I'd have to see them at school. My timetable was mostly with Kayla and Caleb today but in double Bio I was alone with Isaac. I pulled the covers over my head, maybe I could pretend to Dad to be unwell again? No, he'd never let me miss out on another day of school, even if my leg was about to fall off. This was one of the down sides to having a teacher for a Dad.
He was looked really disappointed when I took History instead of Geography, he had always told me there was no point in learning about things that were in the past but the history of our country fascinated me. I wasn't too keen on learning about rocks and maps so History was the better option I thought. I remember him sniffing and saying, "What ever you think is best." But clearly he thought researching mountains and climates was so much better than looking back at Jim Crow Laws and former presidents.
He looked at me with almost the same disappointment when I moaned to him that I wasn't feeling any better than I had at the weekend. I knew it would be tough to convince him but it was worth a shot and I really didn't want to be spending two long periods with Isaac telling me how sorry he was and that he loved me all over again. I'd already got all his texts and voice mails despite Caleb telling him to piss off and to leave me alone.
"Everywhere hurts Dad, I feel awful." I rolled over dramatically, letting out a horrible groan.
"You poor thing, how awful. You sound like your coming down with something really back."
I nodded. Wow, this was easier than I though. "Yeah, I think I'm going to throw up."
"That's a same, I guess you wont be able to go with Caleb to Virginia this weekend then."
I sighed, I knew this had to be too good to be true. "Why don't I wait and see how I feel?"
"Hmm." He felt my head. "Nope, if your really that bad I don't think you should go."
"Your a dick." I burrowing the the pillow so it came out muffled.
"What was that young lady?" He didn't sound too mad but there was an edge to his voice. Then he sighed and patted my back. "C'mon get up, you'll have to face them sometime."
I showered quickly then took some of my medication and got dressed. I pulled on jeans, a pelem top and my favorite converse, dried and brushed my hair and then put on a little makeup. I went into the kitchen and saw that Dad had made me breakfast to cheer me up, trying to be the good guy again.
"Wow, you made me breakfast. Thanks Dad, your the best Dad." I said with a hint of sarcasm.
"Ouch, that hurt." He pulled the plate away from me when I tried to reach from some toast. "I guess you don't want it then." He crammed the slice into his open and smug mouth, chewing loudly and smacking his lips.
I glared at him and elbowed his arm. "Your so mean."
"I'm just a dedicated father." Then he gave in and pushed the plate back other just I when I was about to walk away. I took a big bite and let the glorious butter toast glide over my tongue, Dad was always the best at making toast.
I went back into my room once I'd had three more slices and went to find my leather jacket when my phone buzzed. Caleb texted me:
Hey, r u ready yet?
Yh, y?
Look outside
Caleb's black car was parked outside, gleaming in the sun. I grinned and went to open the door when a cross armed Dad coughed and make me stop in my tracks.
"That's a nice car, isn't it?"
"Ha ha. He's giving me a lift to school, that's all."
"And when am I meeting this Caleb?"
"Whenever you want, he says he's dying to meet you." I grabbed my bag and opened the door. "Bye Dad, see you later."
"Bye, be careful!"
I sighed, it was so typical.
I got in Caleb's car and grinned at him.
"Hi."
"Hey, ready to go?"
"Nope, but we have to go anyway." I sighed, I really didn't want to face them.
"Got any classes with Isaac?"
"Double Bio after lunch."
"Tell me if he gives you any hassle and I'll sort him out for you."
I bit my lip, I hadn't told him about all the texts and voicemails he'd sent, all 127 of them. "Don't. He's not worth it Caleb, I don't want you to get into trouble and if any of this soccer friends see him beat up they'll come for you."
"I can handle them, don't worry." He gave me a reassuring smile.
"I know you think you could but there's so many of them and only one of you. I don't want you to get hurt."
He parked the car and touched my hand. "I'll be fine, you saw what happened to Kai and all his friends ran away with him. Isn't he a Quarterback too?"
"Not anymore, coach cut him from the team when he found out he had a shattered hand. You never filled explained how you did that either." I looked up at him.
He shrugged. "I told you it was a moment of anger, plus it helped that I work out a bit."
"Still, it was kinda unbelievable...."
"I know, honestly I just saw red and then next thing I knew I was crushing his hand."
I slid back in the seat, not quite sure if I believed him. How could someone just shatter someone's hand with inhuman strength?
"Come on, you have to go in sometime."
I sighed. "I know."
"So, are you just going to sit there?"
"Yep." I heard the bell ring, it was shrill and annoying.
Caleb got out the door and then opened my door. "Are you coming now or do I have to carry you?"
I laughed and then he reached in and pulled me out. I felt safe and strong in his arms, like his would never do anything to hurt me. Then he turned around still carrying me and we saw Isaac standing across the road and staring at us. I suddenly felt the guilt rise inside me when I saw his pained expression, Caleb put me down and I felt him tense up.
"No." I touched his arm. "He's not worth it."
Isaac kept staring at me like a lost puppy as me and Caleb turned away from him. I could also see the pain inside him through his eyes and it took everything inside me to turn away and carry on as if nothing had happened. I wanted to run over and hug him but I knew that would just make it worse.
Caleb put his arm around me protectively and walked me towards the door. "Come on, hes not worth it."
