Our pajama day in together was perfect, Caleb made us a second breakfast because I only had one arm working and we lounged along the house lazily together. We cuddled up on the couch together and watched a horror movie, it was wasn't really scary so took the piss out of it instead of actually taking it seriously. It was full of all the cliches that horror movies have like the hot girl with massive boobs always running around screaming and the one black guy getting killed first. I had such a great day until the doorbell rang and make us both jump.
"Want me to get it?" Caleb asked, turning down the tv.
"It's fine, I can do it."
I limped with great difficulty into my room and grabbed my biggest hoodie to cover myself up. I gingerly opened the door just a crack to see a plastic face and a painted smile looking back at me.
"Hello Sam." Dr Cawfield stood at my front door proudly in his lab coat and carrying a clipboard under his arm. "I'm here for your appointment."
I laughed awkwardly, confused. "Your really early, Dad said you were coming at four."
"No, I said to him two o'clock." We stood there awkwardly for a minute. "Well, aren't you going to invite me in?"
"Give me two seconds."
I shut the door and went into my room to change into some clothes when Caleb came in with an anxious face.
"Who is that guy?"
"That's Dr Cawfield my psychiatrist, he's creepy right?"
"I don't like him, Sam I get a bad feeling from him."
"Me too but we just have to deal with it." I said, trying to pull on some jeans over my cast with one hand.
"No, I mean a really bad feeling. I don't think you should invite him in."
"Why?"
"I think he might be a vampire."
I stopped at looked up at him. "What?!"
"I can't hear his pulse and if you invite him in he could come back and hurt you."
I lay back on the bed, feeling more and more anxious. "So, what are we going to do? I can't just not invite him in."
Just then we heard thumping at the door.
"Sam? Are you okay in there? I have places to be so you can't just leave me out here."
"What-"
"Shhh!" Caleb pulled me into the bathroom and shut the door, turning on the water. "He could hear us."
"Shit, what do we do?" I sat on the edge of the bath to stop myself from falling.
"I don't know. It's obvious he's not going away anytime soon." He bit his lip. "I'll go out there and deal with him." He said fiercely, walking over to the door.
"No," I touched him arm. "I can fight my own battles. He doesn't know your here anyway."
"I think he must have heard you talking to me, so he probably does by now."
"I'll go out and talk to him, he'll be fine with me." I finished putting my clothes on and then got up and leaned on Caleb for support.
"And what are you going to say? 'I know your a vampire so you can't come in, sorry.'"
I shot him a look, I hated it when he was so bloody protective.
"Look, you can barley stand Sam. You'll only get hurt if you go out there."
"Seriously, I'm not a fucking damsel in distress. I thought you knew me better than that." I said, hurt that he was being almost as obnoxious as Isaac. I staggered to door and opened it with a smile. "Sorry I kept you waiting, why don't you come in?"
I could hear a tiny voice at the back of my head screaming at me "Are you out of your mind?!" but I knew what I was doing.
Dr Cawfield stepped in and looked around. "Nice place you and your Dad have here, Sam." He said without meaning it.
"Thank you, can I get you anything?"
"No but you can tell your boyfriend to back off." His voice was monotone. "I know you figured out I was a vampire, so lets cut out the bit when you pretend you don't know what I'm talking about."
"Okay." I shut the door. "So, what are you doing here if you know I know."
"I'm your psychiatrist, Sam. It's my job to make sure your okay unlike that idiot boyfriend of yours who gave you a broken arm and leg."
"He didn't, he saved me."
He laughed harshly. "He saved you, did he? Who do you think was out there stalling them and trying to persuade them not to kill you. If I wasn't there then he would have killed you the moment he grabbed you from the club."
I stared at him, shocked. "Why? Why would you do that?"
"Because I made a promise Sam, a promise to someone I kept close to my heart."
"Who?" I asked, not sure if I wanted to know the answer or not.
"Your mother."
I backed away from him. "You didn't know her."
"On the contrary I did. I thought you were a smart girl, didn't you realize she was having an affair?" It was the first time he looked genuinely happy since we'd met.
I felt like he was throwing knifes at me, each knew piece of information I didn't know about my life cutting into me leaving deep wounds. "No. No..."
"Yes." He grinned, cutting into me deeper with his smile. His eerily white canine teeth were really long for his normal teeth and much sharper too. "She was fascinated with vampires, kept begging me to turn her and whisk her away from her dull, lonely life. I was about to but when I came in she was already dying, too far gone to be saved. Her last dying wish was for me to protect you, no matter what and I promised."
"Bullshit!" Caleb suddenly sprinted out of my room and pinned Dr. Cawfield to the wall by his throat. "You spun this story to make her upset, to play with her emotions. Admit it!" He slammed him into it again.
Dr Cawfield then unravelled Caleb's fingers from his throat with ease, breaking his hand and throwing him into the coffee table. He landed heavy onto it, breaking it into pieces of sharp bits of wood.
"Foolish boy. You really think he's going to protect you Sam? He's too young, too weak whereas I'm hundreds of years old." He walked over to Caleb like a proud cat stalking it's prey. "I can protect you just like your mother asked and I'll start by ridding you of this boy who is no use to us."
He picked up a sharp bit of table leg and raised it up in the air where his heart was. "Goodbye, Caleb. No one will miss you."
Just as he was about to shove the wooden piece into Caleb's heart I drove a knife that was lying on the counter into his back with all my the strength of my good arm where his heart was and twisted it. Dr Cawfield groaned and rolled off Caleb, lying on the carpet in a bloody mess.
I looked down at Caleb with tears in my eyes and gulped. "So, what do we do know?" I hesitated.
