FRESHMEN YEAR- OCTOBER

As I typically have done for the past month now, I slide open the door to the classroom and reel in a startled gasp. Orange and dim purple streamers veil my vision; Light asks the obvious question of what's going on whilst I laugh at the surprise of this alone. A single swat of my hand pushes the streamers aside, clearing a path for Light and me to walk into, and I gape at the sight of the classroom.

Darkness, balancing on her tippy toes on the top step of a ladder, hooks the string of a hanging decoration on a hook before climbing down cautiously, admiring it above. It's a clown; its pale tongue hangs over its bottom teeth as it shows off its yellow-tinted teeth. Light shudders beside me, and I'm quickly reminded of the fact that he happens to have a phobia of clowns... The backstory of that doesn't need to be discussed.

I quickly place my stuff down with the urge, the yearning to see the progress of everything. The space is cluttered by Halloween adornments, contributing to the welcoming and generous ambiance. Hues of orange, black, and purple acquire bare spaces, and skulls, and melting candles are placed precisely upon the dark wooden shelves. Bats hung from the ceiling from strings with webs and spiders. My classmates moved around, plastering decorations in every crevice of the room to add to the festivity.

The door slides open again and Jade steps into the room. When I look at her, she grimaces, her eyes flicking around the room, and she adjusts the dark messenger bag across her body. She takes a few steps and stops beside me. Light and I glance at one another before he discreetly steps away and strolls farther into the room, leaving me standing beside Jade. My stomach clenched from tension.

"What's going on in here?"

"The Halloween Season!" Zach jumps from a stool I hadn't noticed earlier. He treads over to Jade and me with a relaxed smile, glancing between Ius.

Jade takes a breath and I notice her nostrils flare. "... Why?"

"What do you mean 'Why'? Because we're already almost halfway through the month and this classroom is still bland. We're spicing it up."

I nod approvingly, picking up a plastic skull resting on the desk to my left. "It's looking nice! Is there anything I can help with?"

After he thanks me, Zach says, "Maybe... Can we use any orange, purple, and black ribbons from the fashion design room?"

I take a moment to think about his question, then nod my head. He follows up with, "Do you think you could go and get them? Or I can if you tell me where they are."

Jade cuts in before I can answer, "You're not going to have her doing your work. What if she needs those ribbons for a Halloween fashion project?"

"But, I don't have—" Jade's shoulder nudges into mine harshly. I hold my right shoulder and glare at her.

"Then, she can simply say the word 'no'," Zach replies, giving a half-shrug.

"Then, no." The fighter huffs, folding her arms tightly across her chest.

Zach bucks his head toward her, a sneer lining his face, and she curls her fingers around her thumb to pop the knuckles. The animosity emitting from both of them was overwhelming, so I quickly broke into the situation saying that Zach could go and get them.

"Sure," he, without hesitation, agrees, "Where are they?"

"They're—" I'm cut off by Jade linking her arm around mine and dragging me over to and out of the door. I'm not given a chance to express my confusion before we're already halfway down the hall and I'm able to break from her arm.
