~Alex's POV~

It's the end of the year once again. Mrs. Armani breezes through the roll call, messing up a few names in a playful tone, before passing out sheets of papers to all of us, then sending us on our own. I skim over the page, looking at all of the checkboxes with hobbies next to them. Then, I read over the directions. For graduation points, we're being instructed to choose at least three electives to participate in for the following school year; they cannot relate to our talent. Grumbles and exclaimations line the room, penetrating the peace, while I pull out my pencil and start looking through the options.

"Lowkey, I might do baking," Light marveled. I can almost hear the thoughtful tapping of his chin.

It's almost like Drake could read minds from across the room when he says, "Please, stay as far way from the kitchen, okay?"

"Why!?"

"You know exactly why," Jaxx remarked, scribbling in a box on his page. Psychology

Zach must've been eavesdropping, too, and curiosity fueled him, "What's wrong with it? What'd he do?"

Dismissively waving, Drake explains with an unmoving expression, "He's why we had that fire evacuation that sent everyone home for the week."

"Oh, you did that?!" Her eyes pierced through Light whilst leaning back into her chair.

A placid night in April is when the alarms destroyed the peace. It had startled me so badly that when I sprung up, the top of my head rammed into her chin. Jade and I hold hands as we navigate the rush of sleepy, zombie-like students roused from their sleep. We stand outside—it was chilly that night, too—waiting for any explanation behind whatever was happening in that building. We waited and waited; fire trucks swarmed the campus, and groups parted as firemen rushed inside. Jade and I stood with Levi, who had Zach using him as a headrest, and a few others. We were all tired. Through the crowd, though, I could see Light and Drake on benches—Drake's head lulled, his folded arms resting on his chest, and Light beside him, panic detectable in his gaze. Apparently, someone blew a fuse in the stove.

"Hey, first of all, that wasn't my fault! Our stove is different from everyone else's," Light retorts desperately.

"Then, don't mess around with something you don't know about."

Light narrows his eyes at Drake, who returns a soft smile before returning to his game, and I return to my electives. I have looked over this list several times, and not a single box is checked off. There are too many choices, too many opportunities to choose from, too little time to pursue them all. I'm thinking much too deeply about this, but I can't help it. My head falls into my sighs with a small sigh. I glance up at the others, and relief flutters in me when I see I'm not the only one not locked in. Zach seems more distracted than me. Watching everything they do, Zach's eyes don't leave the trio as they scribble off their charts.

I observe them for some time, too, but whatever has Zach so focused on them, it's unestablished to me.

I interrupt his focus, asking, "What are you looking at them so hard for?
