FRESHMEN YEAR- OCTOBER

The second I step into the room, I see a paper resting face down on my desk. I look around, swiveling around the rows of desks to mine, noticing all of the papers in similar condition assigned to my classmates' desks. The class is empty since Light and I were the first to arrive, which is rare. Perhaps they've been here long enough already to not feel the need to attend homeroom immediately.

I place my bag down, listening to the materials inside clank together, and pick up the paper to inspect the contents on it. I read it over, and the silence filling the room is interrupted by the murmuring and conversations of my classmates as they mill into the room. On the page is a chart printed in deep black ink, and all of the columns are empty except for the first one: Leadership and Government. My eyes instinctively snap to the top of the page and it read "Temporary Test Schedule".

"What is this?!" Light's voice is dyed in dismay. I glimpse him, and his right hand is tangled in his hair as his wide eyes travel down the page.

"It's a... Schedule?!" Skye brings the page closer to her face, in utter disbelief about what she's seeing.

I shake my head, sliding my bag off of my shoulder. "I'm not sure what it is, but I don't think it's mandatory. Look, it says optional," I add, lifting the page and pointing to the inscribed word beside it.

Light scoffs, it's like the wind is sucked right out of him. "Yeah, right! Look at this!" I squint when Light holds his paper up, then wince when I read 'Mandatory' in bold beside the filled boxes.

"Same! Do we have to go to these things?! When the hell am I going to— is that AP CHEMISTRY?!"

Stepping in at just the right moment, Sora takes the page away from Skye and skims it over; a faint exhale with the passing impression of a laugh emerges from him.

"Good luck."

"Thank you so much for curing and fixing everything, my brother sent from the Heavens." Skye's bright eyes roll in her skull, matching the tempo of the sarcasm trailing her words.

There's not much more to look at on this page since it's only one chart column filled, so I glance over Light's shoulder to see his. Believe it or not, he wasn't lying. I wince. Three of Light's columns are filled with "Mandatory" classes, while only one is optional. I don't think Light would have a taste of freedom in this school anymore; I giggle to myself at the thought.

It takes me a moment to settle in, sitting in my chair. I take out my phone for only a moment, checking for any new notifications whilst waiting for anything new to happen. A recurring pattern I picked up on as I listened to the conversations around me: Only a few of us had a handful of didn't have to attend our classes, but the others' classes were mandatory.

The great man himself emerges from the sliding door not too long after everyone's checked the pages upon their desk, dragging himself across the room to his desk. He sinks into the chair, slouched over, and repeatedly taps the space bar of his keyboard in a sloth-like manner. His eyes are overly sagging with sleep and pale shadows invaded the underside of his eyes. There's a tinge in my heart that feels sympathy for him, yet also curious about what caused him such a state of dismay and... Anguish, I may say.

The silence he brings in his wake dissipates in the blink of an eye with questions and complaints about these papers. A few, like me, just sat back and watched the discord unravel before us.

"Because what is this?! AP?! I am a child," Skye enunciates. A hand rests on her 'broken' heart. "Do you understand the danger we're all being put in if you do such a thing? I can't— I cannot be seen within a mile radius of math. You can understand, right?" The entertainment bites down hard on her lip, and I swear I see her lower eyelid twitch once or twice.
