November 17th

~Alex's POV~

What's a nice way to start fall break other than a dance? Homecoming is next week, just before break, and the only reason I'm going is because my girlfriend invited me. Ohh, I get to say that now, it has a nice ring to it! Anyway, with homecoming comes a lot of preparation. Sitting here beneath a tree with Skye braiding my hair and Charli invested in her book is a result of such preparation, actually.

Today, cheer practice was beyond intense. All it took was a nasty fall, a sore wrist, an unfortunate breakup, and a sprained ankle before the coach said we could be dismissed for the day. I would have ended up on that list with a bad fall if Erza hadn't caught me in time. She's saved me countless times, but this one scared me more than most, and it took a minute to peel me off of her. So, as everyone split off to do what they needed to, leaving the three of us since we didn't have anything to worry about at that moment. Outside, the air was cool without a mere interruption in the sky, so we'd decided to spend some time out here. It's quiet, isolated just enough for peace, the perfect spot for a nap.

Skye's fingers get stuck in my hair again, and I hiss as I tip my head toward her. She apologizes profusely, but her fingers only dig deeper.

"It's always that strand, I don't know why," she marveled, finally getting her hands out and starting to fix the strand. Sky works as gently as she can, taking extra care when braiding. I know it isn't her fault.

"It's mostly the back, yeah. I don't know why, either! Whatever happens back there isn't any of my business," I reply, brushing some of my hair back over my shoulders to make it easier for her. Skye combs her fingers through once or twice before going back to braiding.

She's been getting better. I've subconsciously been keeping an eye on her, especially after she'd joined cheerleading again. The notion sounds creepy, but it's only to make sure that she's doing okay in case everyone else misses it. Skye hasn't had to be hospitalized again in quite some time; she's been her usual hyper, excitable self, and I hope nothing gets in the way of it.

While scrolling on my phone, I accidentally glimpse the time, reminding me that I only have a bit longer before I have to start heading inside for the classroom council meeting scheduled for today. Jade had offered to walk me to the meeting, but she was nowhere to be seen all day. The only place I assume she's at is being taken over by underclassmen as we speak. I promise I just heard them talking about creating their own weight room government.

"Psst, Alex, Skye." Charli closes her book and lowers it into her lap. "Are you free this weekend?"

"Yeah, why?"

"Becaaaause, they're starting to open the ice-skating rinks again and I'm excited," she beams, adjusting the snowflake clip in her hair. "I wanted to invite some people to come skating, too. Oh, and I had taught Candi how to skate not too long ago, so I know she wanted to practice her skills now. "

The only memory I have of ice-skating was going as a family and falling so many times that my hands and knees had faint bruises for quite some time. It's been a while, and it wouldn't hurt to have the opportunity to go with some friends. I accept the offer, and the smile on Charli's face grows wider, making the rosiness of her cheeks prominent. Skye reels in that energy and returns it five times more colorful, standing up and announcing to the silent world that she's finally going ice-skating!
