~Alex's POV~
Candi links her arms around Charli's shoulders excitedly, bringing her close. "Happy birthday," she announces in a somewhat squeal.
"Oh, you remembered," Charli says, holding onto Candi's arm. Her smile is warm against the gloom overhead.
Flipping her smooth, dark hair over her shoulder, Candi giggles, "Well, duh! What's my talent if I can't remember to keep up?"
A bright rose hue creeps from the back of Charli's neck onto her face, and I can't hold back a giggle for a moment longer. While climbing off the bus today, I ran into Charli and Candi sitting on a nearby bench below a beautifully colored tree. I sat over with them, and the leaves continuously fell to our feet into small piles.
According to Candi— who was the first to get here— the school doors were locked, and she'd been waiting outside for some time. Light doesn't hear this warning and mounts the steps to the front doors. Charli, Candi, and I turn simultaneously to watch Light test the theory. When he reaches the door, he curls his fingers around the handle and pulls. His eyes fall to the handle, confusion glazing them over before he tugs at it again.
"It's locked," Candi calls out, waving with her fingers.
Light surveys the scene before his gaze locks on us. He throws his hands up before letting them drop. "Then, why didn't you tell me?!"
Candi replies, "We had to see if it still was or not."
"You get up here and test it," Light dares, turning from the door sharply and back down the steps. When he stops at the bottom, he lowers to the third to last step before withdrawing his phone from his pocket.
"Well, we got our answer," Candi simpers, turning her head back to us, and her hair flicks over her shoulder.
Charli's face flushes against the wind blowing at us. I tug my scarf up slightly, Candi shivers beside Charli and her eyes screw shut. The chill whisked by through the smatter of trees around the school entrance. Time ticks slowly before we hear a faint 'click' behind us. We, including Light, turn and stare fixedly at the doors. A staff member appeared from behind it briefly, pushing the doors open before swiveling on her heel and stalking away.
We jump up from the bench, clamber up the steps, and stepping into the building, we brace ourselves from the cold trailing. Candi quickly shoves the door shut since it isn't closing fast enough, and Light slips through the crack in record timing.
"Well, geez," he huffs, tugging down the hem of his blazer to readjust it. A muscle above his temple twitches ever so slightly, Light pinches and pulls out his shirt before letting it snap back to its original position several times.
Candi shrugs. She holds the temple of the sunglasses perched on her head. "Sorry, Sweetie. Didn't mean to," she teased. It's like a twinkle played when Candi winks.
Light merely rolls his eyes. "As if I'm gonna believe that. ¿Dónde está el billete cuando lo necesitas?"
"¡No murmures cosas en voz baja, por favor!" Candi's hands are firmly propped on her hips and a brow rises on her forehead.
I gasped while Charli exclaims, "You can speak Spanish?!"
The influencer lulls her head to the side. The vibe radiating off of her screams nothing but satisfaction and dignity. "Yep. I'm Hispanic."
