October 6th
~Alex's POV~
Game Over. Again. We've played about five times already, and I've lost every single one! Then again, I'm going against the Ultimate Gamers. The least I was expecting was a few sympathy points.
"Oh, I won," Chiaki hums, a small smile on her lips. She returns to the main menu as Drake and I do.
Drake says, "Got a close second. This one's different from my usual one." He turns the blue-ish console around in his hands.
"I know, I had to use that to my advantage."
"I mean, if it makes you two feel better, I have no idea what the hell I'm doing," I admit, clicking a few buttons to adjust the settings.
If we have nothing to do, we spend our afternoons gaming beside the fountain. It's cooler over here than anywhere else, with the fountain water sprinkling as it splashes in the bowl of the foundation. The heat has been bad ever since school has started, its shocking honestly, given that it's early in October. It's supposed to be cooler by now!
But here I am, sitting here in the sun playing games. Chiaki had insisted that this time was different since someone else was supposed to be coming along. Eventually, he does. Dressed head to toe in a black uniform—I can only imagine that he's burning up—with a school bag slung over his shoulder. The crest of his blazer tells me exactly what I need to know: he's from the reserve course. But, at the same time, he's familiar. The shocked look on his face when he spots us together, and the sheepish grin that follows. I've seen him before.
"Hinata, there you are," Chiaki exclaims, even then her voice is incredibly soft. She scoots over on the bench and pats the space to her right. "You can sit here. There's still another console for you to play, too."
As he sits down, he drops his bag beside the bench with a relieved sigh. "Thanks. What're we playing?"
"The Teamwork Game."
Hinata looks at Drake and me, then raises his hand a bit in a greeting. I narrow my eyes at him; he's too familiar. His voice, too. Then, it clicks to me.
"Sorry, sorry, I didn't mean to glare," I say quickly. "You were familiar to me, and then I remember that I had seen you before... But if I tell you where, I'd probably get in trouble."
"Why? Were you stalking me or something?"
My cheeks heat up as I set the console down in my lap. "What?! No, no, I was in the other building the other day and saw you stand up to a girl for, uhhh—Chiaki, what's the redheaded girl's name in your class?"
"Mahiru?"
"Mahiru," I echo, "I saw you stand up to the blonde girl, but I had left before I saw what happened after. So, I thought you were cool for that."
Now, it's his turn for his cheeks to blush pink. He scratches the back of his neck, waiting for his game to load. "I just wanted to make sure things didn't get out of... hand. She tends to get a bit carried away with things regarding talents. She thinks she didn't live up to her family's potential, so I have to remind her that she did. Just... she just has to wait."
