FRESHMEN YEAR- DECEMBER

The cold nips at my cheek when I press it against the glass, peering through the small flecks of snow falling from the clouded gray sky. My gloves are tucked into my pocket as I sit across from Luca in the windowseat. Like a quilt of whispers, snow gently covers the world outside with soft secrets only the approaching winter knows. Students from different classes make their way through the heaps snow, dressed in their bronze uniforms. They stand out against the white coating the ground, showcasing their vibrant accessories that help keep them warm in the chilly weather.

It's not common for us to have snow in December, especially this early into the month. Fall break passed hastily and now we're not too far from Christmas. My eyes stray from the hassle below and instead went across the street: Lamp posts are decorated with thick, durable strings of lights wrapped around the post until it reaches the frog collar, to which the end of the string is concealed by a warm, yet flashy wreath; red and yellow infiltrate the green leaves of the decoration. Along the thick concrete wall trims bulging out from above, lights of red, green, and a cozy yellow glowed against the frigid flakes and white surrounding them. Many of the stores, restaurants, and several attractions in the city are decorated handsomely with human-sized animatronics that move along with cheerful tunes and happily spread the excitement through those passing by, the stars twinkled brightly in their eyes as they looked through the glass windows, revealing a magical world filled with the spirit of Christmas.

The sound of the door sliding open interrupts my momentary daze, and I quickly look away from the window. My curiosity piqued, I turn to see who has come through the door. Jade steps inside, combing her fingers through her hair as melting flakes atop turn to water, dripping from her ends. As she walks to the back of the room, dropping her bag along the way, Zach walks in after her, laughing and whipping his head back and forth, like a dog, to rid of the excess water.

"What happened?" I asked, glancing at Jade before reading Zach's grin, a playful spark, lighting up the room like a firefly the night, his cheeks and nose rosy against his pale skin from the crisp atmosphere outside.

"I threw a snowball at her," he laughs, pride like a glass holding rivers worth of champagne in each syllable. "But, of course, she didn't go down without a fight. She tried making one, but it crumbled every time, haha!"

"Yeah, because you" — Jade hissed, Zach recieving a fierce look from her whilst she grabs a towel from a drawer and starts drying her ends— "Didn't give me the chance to! You kept throwing them!"

Zach sticks his tongue out at her; I can tell he's fighting back blowing raspberries, too. "You've gotta be quicker than that."

"Doesn't sound like a fair fight to me," I giggle while propping my feet up on the window seat, pulling my knees in tight against my chest.

"Of course, you'd say that. She's like, what, your best friend?" Zach walks over to his seat in front of Levi, dropping his bag and sitting on the chair backward. He uses the backrest of the seat to act as a place for his arms to serve as cushions. He rests his cheek against his arms, looking between Jade, Levi, and I.

"I guess you could say that, yeah. And it sounds like something you'd do anyway. Play fair— you're like a cat!"

When Levi laughs, Zach lifts his head slightly, his mouth ajar and brow furrowed from genuine confusion. "What's that supposed to mean?!"

The case of "The Attack on Jade" doesn't last long. It's almost completely forgotten as the class starts to fill up, bringing in the brisk winds from outside and snow steps trailing in. It became so much that everyone was too cautious to try and leave the room in fear of slipping; I refused to make a fool of myself over something so small. Warmth kisses away the cold spots on my cheek as I lean up off of the frosted window and turn toward the classroom.
