Jungkook stood still, his hand slipping from the A/C remote as Taehyung’s words settled into the air like dust in golden light.
You were missing. And it wasn’t the same.
He didn’t know what to say to that.
He wasn’t sure he even could.
So instead, he let Taehyung lead him gently back to the couch, their shoulders brushing once as they sat side by side—close enough to feel each other breathe.
A long silence settled between them.
But it wasn’t cold.
It felt like safety.
Taehyung passed him a fresh glass of water. Jungkook held it with both hands, sipping slowly.
“Thanks,” he whispered.
Taehyung didn’t reply immediately. His eyes were on the floor, like he was choosing every word before speaking.
Then, softly:
“Why did you say all that earlier?”
Jungkook blinked. “What?”
Taehyung turned toward him slightly.
“That this place isn’t good enough. That I shouldn’t be here. That you’re not enough.”
Jungkook flinched a little. “…I didn’t mean it like that.”
“You did.”
Jungkook didn’t respond.
Taehyung’s voice stayed calm, but his eyes were sharper now. “Where did that come from?”
Still, Jungkook said nothing.
Taehyung waited.
One second.
Two.
Three.
But when the silence started to feel too heavy again, he leaned in a little closer. Not enough to corner him—just enough to let him feel the sincerity.
“Tell me,” he said quietly.
Jungkook stared down at the water glass.
And slowly, after a long, shaky breath—
“…At your party,” he whispered.
Taehyung didn’t move.
Jungkook’s voice was faint, like the words burned his throat more than the fever ever had.
“I got turned around near the side hallway. I wasn’t trying to eavesdrop. I just… heard them talking.”
“Who?”
“I don’t know their names. Two women. One older man.”
Jungkook swallowed hard.
“They said things. About me. About my mom.”
Taehyung’s jaw tensed.
Jungkook kept his eyes down. “They said I was throwing myself at you. That my mom was pushing me into rich circles for attention. That I didn’t belong there. That you’d get bored of me.”
