Taehyung came down the grand staircase in a crisp white shirt and charcoal dress pants, his watch gleaming faintly under the morning light. His expression was its usual unreadable mask - quiet, composed, a little colder than usual. He hadn't slept much. His mind had drifted to Jungkook more times than he could count.
The dining hall smelled of freshly brewed coffee and honeyed rice cakes. The long table was already set, and unfortunately... already occupied.
His grandmother.
Eunchae.
His father.
And his mother.
Taehyung's jaw ticked.
Great. Exactly how he wanted to start his morning.
He took his seat silently, offering a polite - barely there - nod to his mother, and a colder one to his father. He didn't bother acknowledging the other two.
"Good morning, Tae," Mrs. Kim said warmly.
"Morning, Eomma."
Eunchae, sitting two seats away, tucked her hair behind her ear shyly. "Oppa... good morning," she whispered in her overly sweet, painfully coy voice.
Taehyung didn't even blink in her direction.
His grandmother cleared her throat dramatically. "Tae-ah, you should respond when a young lady greets you. She's being polite."
Taehyung picked up his spoon. "I only respond to sincerity."
Eunchae's smile faltered.
Mrs. Kim hid a very pleased smile behind her teacup.
For a moment, only the soft clinking of utensils filled the room.
Then, casually - far too casually - Mrs. Kim set down her chopsticks.
"So," she said, "I've been thinking about Taehyung's marriage."
The entire table froze.
Taehyung stiffened visibly, expression still blank but fingers curling slightly around his spoon.
Mr. Kim arched a brow. "Marriage? That again?"
Grandmother Kim smiled, triumphant. "Finally, you've come to your senses. Eunchae is-"
Mrs. Kim raised a hand.
"I wasn't talking about Eunchae."
Silence.
Complete, devastating silence.
Eunchae blinked. Once. Twice. Then her face crumbled in confused horror.
"W-what? But... I'm the one who-"
Mrs. Kim continued without even looking at her. "I was thinking... Jungkook would make a lovely son-in-law."
Taehyung's spoon clattered.
His father choked on air.
Eunchae gasped loud enough to echo.
Grandmother Kim's eyes widened, outrage boiling instantly. "JUNGKOOK?! That café boy?! Are you out of your mind-"
"He's not just a café boy," Mrs. Kim said, calm and firm. "He's kind, hardworking, respectful, and he makes my son smile more than I've seen in years."
Taehyung froze.
His heart skipped - then restarted in a way that felt embarrassingly alive.
He kept his expression blank, but inside?
