Nixie

We grab some snacks and sit at the Alpha's table.

Kyle comes in and joins us. "What have you three been up to?"

Before I say anything, my phone starts ringing. My eyes widen when I see the caller id.

"Don't answer it!" Shay tells me.

I snort. "I have to. Compulsion." So, as much as I'd rather not, I answer the call. "Hi Mom." I say pleasantly while sticking my finger in my mouth to show them my true thoughts.

"Don't hi me, Nixie. Where are you?"

Dillon grabs the phone, "She's where she's meant to be, witch." His voice makes me scared, and he likes me.

"I will end you, cur," she threatens, clearly knowing who he is...or at least what he is.

"You can try, witch. But as I recall, you failed miserably on your prior attempt. And we know what to expect from you this time."

"You will give her back!"

"Why would I give her to you?"

"She's MINE!" my mother roars.

"Tell that to her father."

With that, my father appears and grabs the phone, "She is mine now, witch. You will never touch her again."

I hear a screech that makes us all wince then my father laughs, "Still can't stand to lose, can you? Well, get use to it." With that, he drops my phone in my full soda glass.

My eyes are shocked, but my lips are smiling. "I've always wanted to do that!"

He chuckles, "Me, too! And now I have a good reason."

"I'll miss my phone though," I say with a sigh.

"I'll get you a new one. With a number she can't trace."

"So, now what?" I ask. "I can't go outside; I can't go to school or the gym or the library."

"Yes, you can," Kyle tells me. "There's a library on the second floor and a gym in the basement."

Dillon nods, "My mom offered to help you learn the wolf history and other things you need to know. She said you'd start Monday."

"So, back to school." I smile at him because I'm excited to learn. "But will Shay and the rest of the students be safe at school?"

My dad and Dillon share a look then my dad smiles at me. "Don't worry, Nix. Precautions will be taken."

My eyes move to Shay, and I jerk my head to the stairs. She nods. I turn to Dillon. "I'm going to talk to Shay."

He leans over and kisses my forehead. "Stay inside, please."

"I will," I promise with a half-smile. I bite my lip to stop myself from begging him to hold me again. I'm having a weird mini-panic attack, like someone is...

I hear him take a breath then grab my chin, his eyes meeting mine. "What's wrong?"

"I'm getting a little bit overwhelmed. I feel...strange." Then, my world goes dark.

I wake up in my bed, with Dillon lying beside me, his back against the headboard working on his tablet.

"What happened?" I ask groggy.
