The rest of the weekend passed in blissful tranquility. Sophia finally felt at peace, her career blossoming and her relationship with Alexander stronger than ever. Their last day at the resort, the calm was abruptly shattered.
Alexander received a call while they were having breakfast. As he answered, his expression shifted from calm to tense. Sophia, watching him from across the table, felt a chill as she saw the change in his demeanor. His jaw tightened, and his eyes grew cold—so cold it sent a shiver down her spine.
“I’ll take care of it,” he said into the phone before hanging up.
He stood, his face still darkened by whatever news he had just received. “I need to leave,” he said, his voice clipped but not unkind. “I’ll send a driver to pick you up later.”
Sophia blinked, taken aback by the sudden change. “Is everything alright?” she asked softly.
“For now,” he replied, not offering any further explanation. Before he left, he added, “One more thing—work from home for now. I’ll make sure everything is arranged.”
Sophia was confused but nodded. She called her superior, Carla, later that afternoon, requesting to work from home temporarily.
To her surprise, Carla agreed without hesitation. “It’s no problem at all, Sophia. Take whatever time you need. Just send in your work as usual.”
Sophia hung up, puzzled. Carla had never been this accommodating before. Little did she know, Alexander had already contacted the company and made arrangements for her to work remotely.
As she sat back in her chair, Sophia couldn’t help but wonder. She didn’t fully understand the extent of Alexander’s influence, nor did she know that Allure Fashion was his company. But one thing was certain—there was far more to him than met the eye.
Sophia spent the next few days in Alexander’s apartment, a luxurious yet cold space that mirrored its owner’s personality. As the hours passed, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong. She didn’t hear from Alexander at all—no messages, no calls. And though she knew their relationship wasn’t built on love or trust, she found herself worrying about him.
On the third day, a package arrived for her at the apartment. It was from a luxury boutique in the city, containing a stunning black gown and a handwritten note in Alexander’s neat handwriting: Wear this tonight. There’s a gala at the Evans Foundation. You’ll attend in my place.
Sophia stared at the note, her heart racing. A gala? And she was supposed to represent Alexander?
She had never been thrust into the spotlight like this before, and the thought of attending such an event alone, especially in Alexander’s absence, filled her with anxiety. But the other part of her—the part that had survived Marcus’s cruelty and emerged stronger, knew that this was her chance. Her chance to show the world, and maybe even Alexander, that she was more than just a pawn in their agreement.

That evening, as Sophia stepped into the glittering ballroom, she felt every eye on her. The gown Alexander had sent fit her perfectly, hugging her curves in all the right places. The whispers started immediately—who was this woman? The wife of the elusive Alexander Evans, yet no one had ever seen them together in public.
Sophia held her head high, determined to play the part she had been given. She greeted those who approached her with grace, even though she had no idea who most of them were. Wealthy socialites, powerful businessmen, and influential politicians—they all seemed to know her, even though she was a stranger in their world.
