Jake nodded in agreement. “Yeah, he’s made it pretty clear he’s not interested. You sure this is a good idea?”
Jessica waved her hand dismissively, her heavy makeup doing little to conceal the anxiety in her eyes. “I’m not here to cause trouble,” she said, forcing a smile. “I just… I need to see for myself. I need to know if it’s true.”
Both men exchanged looks, knowing they had been cornered. Jessica could be persistent, and neither of them had been able to refuse her when she’d insisted on joining them tonight. They just hoped Alexander would understand.
As they chatted, the door to the hotel room clicked open, and in walked Alexander, his imposing figure filling the doorway. He was holding hands with Sophia, his wife. The two of them looked effortlessly elegant, a picture of contentment as they entered the room together. But the moment Alexander’s eyes fell on Jessica, the atmosphere shifted.
His jaw tightened, and his expression darkened. “Miss Jason,” he said coldly, making it clear he was displeased to see her there.
Sophia, still holding Alexander’s hand, felt the tension in the room. She didn’t know the full history, but it was obvious that Jessica wasn’t just another friend. As Alexander’s grip on her hand tightened slightly, she knew one thing for sure—this wasn’t going to be a friendly reunion.
The moment Alexander and Sophia stepped into the room, the atmosphere shifted like a drop in temperature. The two men, Michael and Jake, stood to greet their friend with wide smiles, but their eyes darted nervously toward the third person seated on the plush chair, sipping from a wine glass with her legs crossed.
Jessica Jason.
Sophia immediately felt the shift. Alexander’s grip tightened around her hand, his jaw subtly clenching. Michael was the first to break the awkward silence, stepping forward and giving Alexander a hearty pat on the back.
“Alex, it's been ages! You’re looking even more untouchable than before, man,” Michael said, his grin widening. “And this must be the lovely wife we’ve been hearing so much about.”
Sophia smiled politely and extended her hand. “Nice to meet you both.”
Jake chuckled as he shook her hand. “Lovely indeed. You’ve really kept her hidden, Alex. What’s up with that?”
“Busy life,” Alexander replied smoothly, his tone giving nothing away as he led Sophia to the seating area. “But now that we’re here, let’s enjoy the evening.”
Jessica’s eyes tracked their every movement. She placed her wine glass down, its soft clink echoing in the sudden quiet. Rising gracefully from her seat, she walked over, her expression guarded yet undeniably fixed on Alexander.
“Alexander,” Jessica greeted, using his full name instead of the familiar ‘Alex’ like the others. Her tone held an edge—polite, but cold. “It’s been a long time.”
Alexander’s smile vanished. He nodded curtly. “Miss Jason.”
Sophia’s eyes flickered between them, catching the sharp undertone in their exchange. Jessica ignored her entirely, her gaze locked on Alexander as if Sophia wasn’t even standing beside him.
Sophia felt a twinge of discomfort but held her ground, leaning closer to Alexander as a small sign of possessiveness. She wasn’t one to back down easily, especially not when someone was clearly trying to ignore her presence.
“I wasn’t expecting to see you here,” Alexander continued, his tone flat as he looked at Jessica with barely concealed displeasure. “I thought this was a private gathering.”
