The drive to the warehouse was a blur. Sophia sat in the back of the car beside Alexander, her fingers intertwined with his, but her mind was elsewhere—racing through the possibilities, the fear, and the relief that Catherine and Ethan were alive. She had barely been able to breathe since Gerald’s threats, and now, with each passing moment, she could feel the pressure inside her chest easing, just slightly.

Alexander’s security convoy moved swiftly through the city, the flashing lights of their escort cutting through the dim evening streets. He remained silent beside her, focused, the tension in his jaw and the tight grip on her hand the only outward signs of the storm brewing inside him. Sophia didn’t need words to know what he was thinking; they had been through too much together for her not to sense his fury.

When they reached the warehouse, Alexander’s men were already waiting. The building loomed large and shadowy against the night sky, but there was no more danger inside. As they stepped out of the car, Sophia saw one of the men approach.

“They’re inside,” the man said, his voice respectful as he addressed Alexander. “Both unharmed, but they’re shaken up. They’re waiting for you.”

Sophia felt her knees tremble again as Alexander led her inside the warehouse. The cold air hit her face, and for a moment, her vision swam with the weight of what she was about to face. She hadn’t seen her family in days, and though she knew they were safe now, the fear of what they had been through clawed at her.

They turned a corner, and there they were.

Catherine and Ethan sat on a small couch in the center of the large, empty space, looking exhausted and pale but very much alive. As soon as Catherine saw her, she stood up, her eyes wide with a mix of relief and fear.

“Sophia!” Catherine’s voice cracked with emotion as she rushed forward, pulling her daughter into a tight embrace.

Sophia clung to her, tears spilling over as she whispered, “I’m so sorry. I should’ve never—”

“No,” Catherine cut her off, shaking her head fiercely. “It wasn’t your fault. You couldn’t have known what he would do.”

Ethan, still seated on the couch, looked up at them with wide, fearful eyes. He was only a teenager, but the ordeal had aged him somehow. His face was drawn, and he seemed smaller, more fragile, as though the weight of everything had crushed the boyish confidence he’d once carried.

Sophia knelt in front of him, reaching out to cup his face. “Are you okay?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper.

Ethan nodded, though his eyes glistened with unshed tears. “I’m okay,” he said, though his voice wavered. “But I was scared, Sophia. I didn’t think we’d ever get out.”

Her heart broke at his words, and she pulled him into a hug, holding him as tightly as she could. “I’m so sorry, Ethan,” she whispered. “But it’s over now. You’re safe.”

She could feel Alexander standing behind her, watching the reunion in silence. His presence was a steadying force, reminding her that no matter how terrifying things had been, they were back together now—and that was what mattered.

After a few moments, Alexander stepped forward, addressing Catherine and Ethan with a calm authority that soothed their fears. “You’re both safe now,” he said, his voice gentle but firm. “My team will make sure you’re protected from now on. Gerald won’t be able to hurt you again.”

Catherine gave him a shaky smile. “Thank you,” she said, her voice thick with emotion. “For everything.”

Alexander nodded, but his eyes flicked back to Sophia, and she saw the unspoken promise there—the one that told her he would never allow anything like this to happen again. Gerald might have been captured, but Alexander wasn’t going to rest until every loose end was tied up.
