Days passed, each one more tense than the last. Gerald’s presence loomed larger, and every step Alexander took felt like they were moving closer to a deadly confrontation. Sophia’s world had shrunk to the confines of their penthouse, where security was tighter than ever.
But despite the walls of protection, there was an undeniable sense of unease. Alexander was working tirelessly, his late-night meetings and covert phone calls becoming more frequent. Every time she asked him for updates, his answers were brief, as if he didn’t want to worry her with the full weight of the situation.
One afternoon, as Sophia sat on the balcony, watching the city below, she noticed something strange. A car parked across the street had been there all morning. It didn’t move, and the tinted windows gave no clue as to who was inside.
Sophia’s instincts kicked in. She grabbed her phone and called Alexander, her pulse racing.
“Something’s wrong,” she said as soon as he answered. “There’s a car outside , it’s been sitting there for hours.”
Alexander’s response was immediate. “Don’t leave the penthouse. I’ll send someone to check it out. Stay inside, Sophia.”
She hung up, her heart pounding. The minutes that followed felt like an eternity, but eventually, she heard the front door open and the sound of Alexander’s voice as he spoke to the security team.
He entered the living room a moment later, his face tense. “It’s not Gerald’s men,” he said, though his tone didn’t offer much comfort. “But we’re increasing security around the building. I don’t want to take any chances.”
Sophia exhaled, but the tight knot of anxiety in her chest didn’t fully loosen. “This is all getting so real,” she whispered.
Alexander came over to her, pulling her into his arms. “It’s been real for a long time,” he said quietly. “But it’s almost over. We’re so close to ending this.”
She rested her head against his chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. It was moments like this, when the world outside seemed so distant, that she felt the full weight of how much had changed between them. They weren’t just partners in a dangerous game anymore. They were in this together, for better or for worse.
But as much as she wanted to believe it would all end soon, she couldn’t shake the feeling that the storm was still coming. And when it hit, it would be like nothing they had faced before.
The phone call came late one night, just after midnight. Alexander was in the study, poring over documents, when his phone buzzed on the desk. Sophia watched from the doorway as he picked it up, his expression turning deadly serious.
She knew immediately it wasn’t good news.
“What is it?” she asked as he ended the call, her voice barely above a whisper.
Alexander stood slowly, his face tight with controlled fury. “It’s time.”
Sophia’s stomach dropped. “Time for what?”
“To finish this,” he said, his voice cold as steel. “Gerald made his move.”
Sophia’s breath caught. “What did he do?”
“He’s going after my business,” Alexander explained, his jaw clenched. “He’s trying to ruin everything I’ve built, and he’s not being subtle about it. He’s making sure I know it’s him.”
Sophia felt the room spin as the gravity of the situation hit her. “What does that mean? What do we do?”
Alexander’s eyes burned with determination. “It means we’re going to hit back. Hard. I’ve been waiting for this moment. He just gave me the excuse I needed.”
