Amelia gripped the steering wheel tightly, her eyes flicking from the road to the rearview mirror, where Sophia was slumped in the backseat, barely coherent. The drive to her apartment was quieter than usual, the tension hanging in the air thick and heavy. Sophia mumbled incoherently, her head resting against the cool window, but nothing she said made much sense.
Amelia sighed, glancing at her friend. “Soph, who was that woman back there? Maya, right? Do you know her?”
Sophia stirred, blinking slowly as she processed the question. “Maya?” she repeated, her voice slurred. “Yeah… Maya… she told me ‘bout Marcus. Told me… he was cheating…”
Amelia’s brows furrowed. “Wait, you mean the Maya who called you about Marcus’ affair? She just showed up out of nowhere tonight?”
Sophia nodded lazily, her eyes struggling to stay open. “Yeah… she’s… nice… I think… saved me, huh?”
Amelia sighed again, realizing she wasn’t going to get much more from Sophia tonight. She glanced over at her friend, who was now halfway to passing out. “We’ll talk about it tomorrow,” she muttered under her breath. There was something about that woman, something that didn’t sit right with Amelia. But for now, Sophia needed to rest.
Once they arrived at Amelia’s apartment, she carefully helped Sophia out of the car, guiding her up the stairs and into her guest room. Sophia was still mumbling, but her words were too jumbled for Amelia to make sense of. As soon as she laid her on the bed, Sophia’s eyes closed, and within minutes, she was asleep.
Amelia watched her for a moment, her mind racing. She couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to this Maya woman than Sophia was letting on—or maybe even knew herself. But for now, there was nothing she could do. She’d have to wait until morning to get some real answers.
Meanwhile, across town, Alexander paced his office, unable to sleep. His mind was consumed with worry about Sophia and the scandal Jessica had orchestrated. He couldn't get the image of Sophia drinking herself into oblivion out of his head, and knowing that she was out there, possibly in danger, made it impossible for him to rest.
He had his team working tirelessly to recover the CCTV footage from the Grand Royale Hotel, desperate to prove his innocence. But Jessica had been thorough, ensuring that all traces of the security footage were deleted. Frustrated, Alexander couldn’t wait any longer. He grabbed his phone and dialed his friend Michael Jordan, a tech expert with a knack for hacking.
Michael picked up after a few rings, his voice groggy. “Hey buddy, need my help?”
“I need the CCTV footage from the Grand Royale Hotel,” Alexander said bluntly. “ASAP.”
Michael chuckled on the other end. “Just like that? You wake me up in the middle of the night, demanding favors?”
Alexander knew there was no point in beating around the bush. “What do you want, Michael?”
There was a brief pause, followed by Michael’s smug tone. “That’s more like it. I’m working on this massive computer program, a real game-changer. It’s draining my funds. How about you invest? I promise you’ll see returns.”
Alexander sighed. “How much?”
“Ten million.”
“Deal.”
Michael’s grin could practically be heard through the phone. “Now you’re talking. I’ll send you the footage in a minute. I’ve already restored it.”
Alexander raised an eyebrow. “You already have it?”
Michael’s laughter echoed. “You think Jessica’s the only one with tricks? I hacked the footage before she could destroy everything. I knew you’d call.”
