It was officially time for me to have a complete fresh start away from my insane ex boyfriend and my insane family. I couldn't be bothered to ask my parents to drive me and see me off at Barden University so I took a cab. I got there and grabbed my bags and just took it all in. "Hi there! Welcome to Barden University. What dorm?" Some crazy girl asked. "Uh, Baker Hall?" I said and she guided me and I sort of got distracted by this guy, my age, Jewish, singing "Carry On Wayward Son" one of my favorites actually. He was even singing to me, looking at me, mimicking the guitar solo which made me giggle. He drove away with his parents. "Your campus map. And your official BU rape whistle. Don't blow it unless it's actually happening." She said, I almost blew it but I was generous enough not to. I walked in my room to see my supposed roommate. "Hey. You must be Stacie, I'm Lara Jean or even Lara is fine." I told her. "Nice to meet you, Lara Jean." She said and we both chuckled
I was putting my stuff together, I'm also into DJing.. Someone knocked. "Campus police, hide your wine coolers!" It was my dad. "Dr. Mitchell" since he's a professor here. "Haha! Just your old man making a funny..." "Chris Rock, everybody." I said sarcastically. "You must be Lara Jean's roommate. I'm Dr. Mitchell. Her dad. I teach Comparative Literature here." He said Stacie. "Cool. I'm Stacie Conrad." She said, smiling at him.. "So when, uh, when did you get here? How did you get here?" He asked. "Took a taxi. Didn't wanna inconvenience you and mother." I said and he scoffed. "Where is mother by the way? Drinking?" I asked. "She's actually in Vegas at a conference--" "No, Dad, I don't actually care." I said and he chuckled.
"So have you guys been out on the quad yet? In the spring time, all the students study on the grass." "I don't wanna study on the grass, Dad. I wanna move to California and be a singer. I wanna tour and sing infront of thousands of people. You know that's been my dream since before I could even sing." I told him. "Yeah, here we go again. You know, Lara Jean, singing is not a profession. It's a hobby. Unless your Beyonce or someone awesome." "That's not.. I....I wanna sing, Dad. I wanna make singles and sing until I get nodes or something." I said which was obviously a joke because from what I heard, nodes suck.
"But you're going to get a college education, first. For free, I might add. End of story." "I'm going to the Activities Fair. Stacie said. "Me too. I'm going to the Activities Fair with Stacie." I looked at Dad then walked out. I was exploring my options to look at groups. Even though I only came to ignore Dad. We split up and I looked around.
I was walking until a ginger waved me down. "Hi, any interest in joining our a capella group?" She asked handing me a flyer. "Right. This is like a thing now." I said. "Oh, totes. We sing covers of songs but we do it without any instruments. It's all from our mouths." She added. "Yikes." I said. "There's four groups of campus. The Bella's. That's us. We're the tits. The BU Harmonics. They sing a lot of Madonna. Uh, The High Notes. They're not particularly motivated. And then there's....Mmm. So are you interested?" She asked. "I'm sorry. It's just that, you know, it's pretty lame." I said to them. "A-ca-scuse me? Synchronized lady dancing to a Mariah Carey chart topper is not lame." The blonde said then laughing.
