I was working and I saw my boss come to the luncheon area. "Hey, I know you're crazy busy but have you had a chance to check out those demos?" I asked. "Yeah I did." He said and I smiled. "This dead air between us is a good sign." I said. "Look, you've got a great ear and you proved that in the booth, and I was super excited to hear what else you had. And what you gave me was more mashups." He said. "Yeah, no, that's kind of my thing. It's sort of what I do." I corrected. "Listen, Reggie--is it Reggie?" "Lara Jean? That happens a lot, though, you'd be surprised." I said. "Here's the thing. Any kid with ears and a laptop can do that. Dax can do that. So that's fine if you want a career DJing raves out in the desert. But if you wanna write music producer: you've gotta have an original voice." He told me.
"Yeah. I got lots of stuff to say, I'm just bottling it all up." "Look..Regg--I--what is it?" He asked. "Lara." I said just to make it easier for this dumbass. "You're talented. Everyone else here is talented. So what the hell makes you special, you know what I mean?" He asked and pfft, imagine if Jesse heard him say that. "I'm gonna give you one more shot to show me who you are as an artist. Do not waste it." He told me and I chuckled. "No, sir. Will not waste it." "I really hope you don't, for you sake, cause I would hate to think that singing covers in an a capella group is all you can do. Please replace the paper towels!" He said.
At home.
What my boss said really got to my head and I was trying hard to make him happy. I called Jesse but it went to voicemail. **Hey, it's Jesse. Text me.** "Hey. It's me. Um..pfft, I don't even know what to say. I have nothing to say literally. That's music industry speak for I suck. Your definitely sleeping right now since it's like after midnight. That's cool. Text me when your up, love you." I said then Amy walked in. "Hey." "What? A girl can't say she's going to grab a smoothie and return fourteen hours later? There's nothing suspicious about that! Why are you up so late anyways?" She asked me.
"Um, I was just thinking." I said and she spotted my computer. "Oh, you're working on the set." "No. I'm not working on the set." "What?" "Nothing." I told her. "If you did wanna share something with me, your best friend, I'm a great keeper at secrets. Is it Jesse?" She asked. "No. It's not Jesse, other than the fact that I'm missing him right now." I said. "So there's nothing you wanna share with me?" She asked and I shook my head. "Forget it. It's all good." I reassured her. "So this has nothing to do with that internship that you sneak off to?" She asked and my heart dropped. "What?'' "Come on, Lara. You know how we do that thing every month where I take twenty dollars out of your purse and you pretend not to notice? I saw your ID badge in your bag. Don't be mad." She said and I didn't know about the money.
"I'm not mad actually. About the badge, the money I wanna come back to. Have you been stealing from me for three years?" I asked and she shushed me. "Let's just focus on your lie. LJ, why didn't you tell us? Or at least Chloe?" "Because it's easier. There's so much going on and Chloe would lose her freaking mind if I wasn't focused on winning Worlds. Sorry, I'm just freaking out because, um, it turns out I'm totally not good enough to be a music producer or even a singer. Which is cool and fun and at least I'll be living with Jesse in LA when he does to USC." I said. "I'm just gonna stop you right there. You're the most talented person that I know. Lara Jean, do you know how awesome you are? Your Lara Jean effing Rosson, okay? You're the big L.J.R. That's you. You're awesome!" She told me and I smiled.
"Do you need some of my confidence? Cause I could maybe tone mine down a notch." "Sure?" I said. "Let me rub some out." She said then touching me all fast. She started rubbing her pits. "That comes from there?" I asked. "I'm gonna get you the good stuff now." She said then rubbing her ass. "I don't want ass confidence. I don't want your ass confidence! I don't want your ass--no! I have enough! I have enough! I have enough!" I said but she gave it to me anyway...
