"What happened to your face?" Adeline's big brother, Johnny asked as I stepped into their large kitchen.

"Leave her alone," Addy rolled her eyes, moving to pour me a glass of water.

Adeline was the new girl in school, and everyone wanted to be her friend. She was beautiful, with sunny blonde hair and big brown eyes. Plus she was a ballerina just like me.

And she chose me.

I had only been to her house a few times but I loved it. It was huge and warm and her parents were amazing.

"I'm serious," Johnny frowned, "Did someone scratch you?"

My hand instinctively went to the cut on my cheek and my heart rate quickened.

"Johnny!" Addy groaned, "Stop annoying my friend or I'm telling dad!"

"Tattletale," Johnny rolled his eyes, but he continued to look in my direction, "Gracie, what happened?"

Gracie.

No one ever called me Gracie but for some reason Johnny kept saying it.

"Nothing," I said frantically.

Because the words 'my dad threw a plate at the wall above my head and the shrapnel hit my cheek' didn't exactly roll off the tongue.

I knew at a very young age the things that happened in my house weren't normal. My dad had a temper and it was quick to blow up in all our faces.

"It doesn't look like nothing," Johnnys eyes moved back to the cut.

"Shut up, Johnny!" Adeline stomped her foot, "You're such a moron."

"It's okay," I shrugged, "I just scratched myself too hard."

Johnny didn't look convinced. He instead hopped off the stool, waited until his sister had her back to us and leaned in to my ear and whispered, "You can tell me if something happened. Even if it's when we are eighty years old, I'll still listen."

His words struck me straight in the heart.
And they'd stayed there since that day.

So maybe no one else understood why Johnny Kavanagh was the only boy to occupy my mind.

But I sure did.
And that was good enough for me.
