Sandra's POV
I knew the second I heard Harper's voice say my name that my night was about to go down in flames. There she was, walking up to me with that same confident strut I remember—how could I forget?—and right behind her, the woman I'm practically bending over backward to win back: Dria.
This was the stuff nightmares are made of.
I felt the beads of sweat forming at my temples, and I needed a lifeline fast. Miles was still sitting right next to me, obliviously sipping her drink and scrolling through her phone like she hadn't noticed that the universe had just thrown me the ultimate curveball. I nudged her gently, trying not to look like I was panicking.
Actually, scratch that—I was absolutely panicking.
I whipped out my phone and furiously typed a message to Miles under the table.
Sandra: "HELP. Harper is here. Dria doesn't know she's the woman I ghosted. What do I do?!"
Miles's phone buzzed. She glanced down, saw my message, and then, like the great friend she is, she smirked. Oh, God. I should've known she'd find this hilarious. Of course she would—she lives for drama, and this was premium drama. She didn't even bother to type back. Instead, she looked over at me, eyes gleaming with amusement, and raised her glass in a mock toast. Helpful. Very helpful.
Before I could react, Harper had already reached us, that familiar smile plastered on her face. "Sandra!" she said, all warmth and friendliness, like we were best buddies and I hadn't ghosted her like a coward.
I plastered on the most neutral, least guilty smile I could manage. My face felt like it was going to crack under the pressure. "Harper, hey!" My voice sounded way too high-pitched. I immediately hated myself. "It's been... a long time. How are you?"
She leaned in for a cheek kiss. Dria was right behind her, so I had to act natural—cool, even. You know, like I wasn't freaking out on the inside.
Harper smiled. "I'm good. Busy, obviously. I've got a modeling gig overseas next month. And you?"
"Oh, you know, running a company. Busy as hell. That's me." I chuckled awkwardly. Kill me now.
And then Harper dropped the bomb. She gestured to Dria, who was standing right next to her. "I don't think you've met my lawyer. This is Dria. She just helped me win a huge case."
I could feel my soul leave my body. Of course she is I just saw Dria posted about them. I just said earlier that I don't want our paths to cross with Dria.. But look at us now... Ridiculous.
I glanced over at Dria, trying to gauge her reaction. She was giving me that look—the one where she's reading you like a book, flipping through the pages of your soul. I couldn't tell if she was suspicious yet, but she definitely wasn't her usual smiling self.
Dria tilted her head slightly and said, "Actually, I do know Sandra."
Harper blinked, surprised. "Wait, really? What are the odds?" She chuckled, obviously not sensing the swirling vortex of doom I was trapped in. "Small world, right?"
Yeah. Too small.
I shot Miles a desperate glance, hoping for a distraction, a fire alarm—anything. But no. Miles was sitting there, absolutely loving every second of this. She could've easily bailed me out, but instead, she had the audacity to speak up.
"Well, if the world's that small, why don't you two join us for a drink?" Miles grinned, clearly enjoying the chaos that was unfolding.
I discreetly kicked her under the table. Hard. It wasn't even subtle. I needed her to stop fueling the fire and help me get out of this situation, not throw me deeper into the pit. But no, Miles squirmed, letting out a tiny yelp, which Harper and Dria immediately noticed.
