Chapter 20: Surprised? Delighted?
They watched the car turn the corner and disappear from view before the three of them walked towards their own cars.
"Zhiruo, you can ride your bike back."
Miao Zhiruo pouted. Although the actual reason was that her father's car had a lot of things in the trunk, and her bike was quite big, she still couldn't shake off the feeling that she wasn't their biological child.
"Miao miao, give me the backpack."
"It's always Mo Mo caring for me." Miao Zhiruo gave the backpack to Song Yimo.
With the heavy workload in high school, her backpack was burdensome. It was especially tough for day students like her, without the backpack weighing her down, she could even catch up to her father's four wheels.
Miao Jun helplessly watched his daughter run ahead of him and slowed down a bit. He didn't miss a word of Yimo's conversation.
"What do you think, Yimo? Do you think he's trustworthy?"
"I don't think he's a bad person, and besides, I have nothing to hide."
Miao Jun glanced at the rearview mirror. So far, he had no clue about the man's intentions. But as an adult, he couldn't believe it was just a simple desire to have a little sister, recognized only privately and not with family consent.
His advice was for Yimo not to rush into anything, to get to know him better first. If he came around again, she could take him to meet her grandmother. If her grandmother thought he was good, then they could consider the sibling relationship. Over time, whether he was good or bad, it would become apparent.
"Yeah, I was thinking the same." With Father Miao's words, Song Yimo felt a bit more at ease. She was afraid of bringing instability to the family, especially with her grandmother's care depending on her – she couldn't afford to make any mistakes.
"Don't worry too much. This is still Xinghu County. He's not a local, so as long as we don't try to take advantage of him, we'll be fine."
"I understand, Miao Dad."
Before they arrived home, they saw Grandma Song. Song Yimo bid farewell to Miao Jun and leaped out of the car with her heavy backpack. "Grandma, where are you going at this time? Have you eaten?"
"I already ate." Grandma Song stopped and turned around. Miao Jun also got out of the car. "Where are you going, Aunt Song? I'll accompany you."
"I'm just going for a walk, nowhere in particular. It's only a few steps. Miao Jun, why did you still drive Yimo back? It's a waste of gas."
"I was out to buy something. It's getting a bit chilly at night, and Yimo isn't dressed warmly. Don't go too far. Come back early." After waving goodbye, Miao Jun hopped back into the car and drove away.
Grandma Song patted her granddaughter's arm, feeling her in a thin shirt. She turned back towards home, "Let's go back. Tomorrow's a holiday, right?"
"Yes, we have a four-day break."
Song Yimo was well aware of her grandmother's routine by now. At this time, Grandma would usually be back from her walk. How could she have just gone out now?
So if she wasn't home now, she must be out visiting her younger son's family. That family didn't like her much, and she could only assume it was related to her mother – who had abandoned her years ago. Song Yimo didn't bother to inquire about it. It had nothing to do with her.
Grandma Song gently tapped her granddaughter's hands. "High school breaks are rare. You shouldn't always stay cooped up at home. Go out and have fun with your classmates. My Mo Mo shouldn't turn into a bookworm only focused on studying."
"If my classmates have all gone home, I'll visit Miao miao if I'm bored. If you're worried I'll be bored, you can let me play on the computer more."
"I don't restrict you from playing on the computer, dear." Grandma Song smiled, letting go of any lingering displeasure. She was grateful for her obedient and dutiful granddaughter. She thought that she went easy on herself for a few more years – await Yimo to find happiness, get married, have children, only then she could peacefully close her eyes.
Song Yimo didn't pry into her grandma's thoughts and just shared interesting school stories. She would attend to her grandma until she fell asleep before returning to her room and quietly turning on the computer. Out of habit, she logged into QQ, where her only friend's profile picture was blinking rapidly.
This person was currently her benefactor, and Yimo couldn't delay. She quickly opened the message, and as soon as she read it, her body sat up straight. She immediately went to the website.
She couldn't quite recall when the tipping system started, and she never expected to gain much profit from it. After all, she was just a small-time author. Though she appeared to have a lot of admirers, she had to wait until the book was officially launched to confirm if people would really read it.
But now, the editor told her that her readers had placed her at the top of the tipping chart in just one day!
The webpage opened slowly, and Song Yimo sent a message to the editor. They responded almost instantly, "Finally, you're here!"
"Sorry, I've been busy these past few days and haven't been on QQ."
The editor, Zhang Chuliang, pushed his glasses and responded rapidly, "Have you seen the amount?"
"Not yet, I'll check the backend now, wait a moment."
The webpage finally loaded, and as she scrolled down, the entire comments section was lit in red.
And on the Falun Originals website, only the highest amounts tipped would appear in red!
A red bomb symbolized five hundred yuan!
She had to split it, and there were already several thousand yuan down the line!
The comments section only displayed a portion of it!
