Chapter 30: Heartless People
Grandma Song had the habit of taking a nap in the afternoon, and although she was a little uncomfortable in a new place, she managed to fall asleep reluctantly.
Song Yimo quietly led He Yiqing out of the room, smiling at Grandma Liu from the next bed as they passed by.
Outside, Miao Jun was smoking. When he saw the two approaching, he hurriedly stamped out his cigarette.
"Miao Mama, Miao Dad, you should go back. Grandma will be having surgery soon and I need to go home to pack some things. I can make a quick trip before dinner," Song Yimo said.
Miao Jun immediately vetoed the idea, "It's too tiring to rush like this. Your grandma may have to stay in the hospital for half a month, and you need to take care of yourself first before taking care of grandma. Give us the house keys, tell us what you need, and I'll bring them tomorrow."
Song Yimo thought it over and agreed. She didn't want to leave her grandma alone, especially in a strange place where she might feel anxious. The hospital was a place where everyone felt oppressed.
"Miao Mama, please bring us two changes of clothes each, and anything else we might need. But most importantly, bring my school bag. I can study here in my free time. And, Miao Dad, please ask Miao miao to request a long leave from my teacher. I'll make up for it when I get back."
"You need the parent's permission for a leave of absence, I'll go to the school and request it for you. Don't worry about anything else. Just focus on your studies and as long as your grades don't drop, your teachers will understand."
"I understand."
Song Yimo went back to the ward, took out her bag, found the keys, and handed them to He Yiqing. "Miao Mama, thank you."
"What are you thanking me for?" He Yi took the keys, sighed, and gently stroked her hair. "If you need anything, just give us a call. Don't treat us like strangers."
"If you and Miao Dad are strangers, then I have no family," Song Yimo said with a relaxed smile.
Miao Jun and his wife felt a slight weight lift off their shoulders. "Well, we should go now."
"Let's go together, I need to go to the bank."
Even after He Yiqing got in the car, she kept reminding Song Yimo, "Be careful with the money, don't withdraw too much at once. There are plenty of banks around here, it won't be a hassle to make a few trips."
Song Yimo kept nodding along with her instructions, and Miao Jun couldn't bear it anymore. "Yimo, be sensible and calm down. Let's go, we're leaving."
"Take it slow, Miao Dad."
He Yi looked back at Song Yimo, who was still standing in the same spot, and couldn't help but shed tears. "How can someone be so good, how could Song Yi just abandon her like that? And Song Zhi, how long has it been since he visited his mother? He only cares about spending time with his wife's family. He's heartless, truly heartless."
"He came back recently. He asked for the property deed from Aunt Song, said he needed it to get a loan for business. Aunt Song didn't dare to give it to him, fearing that they would lose the place they live in with Yimo."
"He's a damn scoundrel." He Yi gritted her teeth in anger and took out her phone to call someone. If he couldn't even bother to visit his sick mother, she would make sure he wouldn't be able to walk freely.
Miao Jun didn't stop his wife from making the call, but he didn't hold out much hope either. Instead of waiting for Song Zhi to have a change of heart, he would try to use his connections to help Aunt Song with her medical bills. That would at least provide some relief in the future.
