Chapter 34: After the Surgery, Song Zhi Arrives

Usually, people would lament about time passing quickly or slowly, but now, Song Yimo felt like every minute was sixty seconds, and she had to count fifty-nine times before entering the next minute.

After enduring one hundred and twenty sets of fifty-nine seconds, the lights in the operating room were still on.

In every subsequent fifty-nine seconds, each second felt like slow motion.

Song Yimo closed her eyes and counted each second in her mind. After counting fifty-nine, she looked at the clock and it matched perfectly. She then started counting the next fifty-nine.

Seeing the child's complexion turning paler, He Yi stood in front of her and hugged her. She couldn't find the right words to comfort her, feeling on the verge of tears herself. She was afraid that she would choke up if she tried to speak.

Miao Jun paced back and forth at the door, making Grandma Miao dizzy. She grabbed him and pulled him down to sit next to her, glaring at him before turning her attention back to the door. No one said a word.

They all persevered in this manner.

Grandma Miao was the first to notice when the operating room lights went out. "She's out, she's out."

In her haste to get up, the elderly woman swayed, and Miao Jun quickly caught her. "Mom, are you okay?"

"I'm fine, just got up too quickly and felt dizzy." Grandma Miao pushed her son away and took a few steps forward. He Yi also took Song Yimo by the arm and led her to the operating room door.

The first person to come out was Ni Zhe, still in surgical attire. He took off his mask to reveal a slightly weary face. "There were more polyps than expected, so the cleaning took longer than anticipated. The surgery went smoothly, so don't worry. After the anesthesia wears off, don't let the patient fall asleep, don't feed her anything, not even water. Just wet her lips with a cotton swab dipped in water, and wait until her intestines are clear before giving her liquid food..."

Ni Zhe rattled off a list of instructions. Song Yimo didn't need to pay much attention as she remembered them all. It was all in her memory, just slightly forgotten over time, but a reminder would bring it all back.

Knowing that everything was fine, everyone felt energized. Song Yimo was unusually cheerful, running around back and forth.

She paid the remaining three thousand yuan for hospitalization fees on the first floor and then went to the bank to withdraw the remaining six thousand. She deposited three thousand of it into the hospital account, which should be enough for the remainder of the stay.

Grandma Song woke up half an hour later, the anesthesia hadn't worn off yet, so she didn't feel any pain.

"Grandma, how do you feel?"

Grandma Song smiled at her granddaughter. "Just like you said, after a nap, I'll wake up to see my good granddaughter again."

"When have I ever lied to you." Song Yimo buried her head in her grandma's arm, her eyes turning red with tears.

There was a child at home who needed to have dinner, so Miao Jun and his wife were urged by Song Yimo to leave around four o'clock. Grandma Miao stayed behind.

Song Yimo rented another bed and the nurses, who liked her, brought her a clean set of blankets, the ones they used while on duty, not the ones patients used.

Song Yimo didn't plan to sleep that night, as she was worried she wouldn't be able to hold up. She had taken a nap in the afternoon and after dinner, she put on an eye mask and earplugs and slept for three hours.

Worried that Grandma Miao wouldn't sleep well, she made sure the bed was comfortable and put on earplugs and an eye mask for her too. By late evening, she had helped Grandma into bed and Grandma Miao laughed, "Am I here to care for the patient or to enjoy luxury? Even my wild granddaughter hasn't washed my feet for me."

"I'll take care of Miao Miao when I get back. Anybody can learn this."

Grandma Miao laughed even harder, "It's a strange thing. She obeys you so well, I'll have to rely on Miao Miao to be filial."

Grandma Song felt sorry for her granddaughter, even though she was in pain from her wounds, she quietly advised her to get some rest.

Song Yimo shook her head, dipped a cotton swab in water and moistened Grandma's lips. "I'll be here with you."

This one watch lasted for three nights. Fortunately, with Grandma Miao's help as a substitute, she could find time to catch up on sleep. Though lacking in energy, her complexion wasn't too bad.

Early on Saturday morning, Miao Jun and his wife arrived, leaving He Yi behind to accompany Grandma Miao back home.

He Yi was not as easygoing as Grandma Miao, making Song Yimo lie down with a single word, "Sleep."

With Miao Mom by her side, Song Yimo felt at ease, not needing any special preparations to fall asleep peacefully.

"Tiring her out like this." Grandma Song leaned against the head of the bed, looking at her granddaughter with a heart full of pity.

He Yi's voice softened, "Being filial is only right."

But it wasn't only this child who needed to show filial piety.

Some people couldn't stand to be reproached, and finally appeared at the hospital a week after knowing their elderly mother had undergone surgery and was hospitalized.

He Yi watched as Song Zhi scoffed, "How rare, I thought you wouldn't even bother to come for a visit."

Song Zhi had always found He Yi distasteful, smirking as he replied, "With you here, what difference does it make if I'm here or not? Besides, I have to go to work too. Even if I came every day, I couldn't take that knife in place of my mother."

"Yimo is just a high school student, how can she take a long leave to care for her? A young girl like her spends every night and day here, can you bear it? Where's your conscience?"

"All the conscience was eaten by Song Yi." Song Zhi looked at her sleeping niece and kicked the bed. "My mother raised her with her own hands, isn't it only right that she should be repaid?"

Grandma Song turned her head and slowly put on the eye mask and earplugs tucked under the pillow, looking indifferent.

She had Yimo, and that was enough for her.

Seeing the two Liu brothers who came to pay their respects on Saturday, their faces darkened. The second son was impulsive and made a forceful sound.

Seeing how things were going, He Yi, who was close to the Song family, was itching to grab something and throw it. Her voice trembled with anger, "You were raised by your mother, aren't you? Did you jump out of a crack in the rocks? Song Zhi, you will be struck by lightning!"

Song Zhi nonchalantly raised a corner of his mouth, hands in his pockets, ready to say a few more cutting remarks, but Song Yimo spoke up as she sat up rubbing her eyes, "Here to see Grandma?"

"Otherwise, here to see you?"

Song Yimo nodded. "You've seen it, Grandma is fine. You don't need to take care of her, or even spend a single penny. Just keep your distance, and you can leave now, right?"

"Yimo, you're a high school student now, is that how you talk to your uncle? You talk to family members as if you're about to cut them with a knife. It's the same as your mom. Even if your heartless dad's not like that, you shouldn't be like her."

"I'm most like Uncle, right? Nephews are most like their uncles. I think that's pretty accurate. When the time comes, I can also be shameless like Uncle." Song Yimo stood in front of the hospital bed, shielding Grandma as if to block all the harm.

Seeing that he was not familiar with the place and could do as he pleased, Song Zhi was prepared to speak out of line. But Song Yimo intervened, "Of course, most of the time I still have my dignity, so I won't go to Uncle's workplace to report that you abandoned your elderly parent, and I won't take you to court. I would rather keep the ugly affair hidden. It's not a happy thing for people to find out I have a relative who lacks manners and morals. Grandma has me, and that's enough."
