Chapter 166: After the Incident
If Fang Wei had been present, he would have recognized Zhai Muyang’s status at a glance. But this was Fang Zhen, not Fang Wei. Only through Zhu Can's respectful “Young Master Zhai” did he get an inkling of the man’s exceptional background.
Fang Zhen felt deeply relieved by Zhai Muyang’s standing—otherwise, it wouldn’t have just been his son who was in danger. Even the young woman who had saved him might not have held out until his arrival.
Handing his son to the tall man beside him, Fang Zhen approached Zhai Muyang. His gaze drifted to Song Yimo. “I’m Fang Zhen, the father of the boy you saved.”
With her elder brother by her side, Song Yimo found her calm. She introduced herself with steady composure, “My surname is Song—Song Yimo.”
“As a father who almost lost his son, I can’t thank you enough. I am deeply grateful.” Fang Zhen took a step back and bowed low, his respect unmistakable.
Startled, Song Yimo tugged her brother to step aside, unable to accept such reverence.
Was he serious?
Judging by the armed entourage he led, Fang Zhen’s status was undoubtedly extraordinary, likely a high-ranking military officer. She, a mere civilian, dared not accept such a gesture.
Yet she sensed the sincerity in his gratitude.
“Mr. Fang… um, I…”
Fang Zhen straightened, a gentle smile in his eyes. “I’m quite a bit older than you—call me Fang-ge.”
Seeing her brother nod, Song Yimo accepted the address. “Fang-ge, I only happened to be there. I didn’t even have time to think. The situation unfolded right before my eyes—if I hadn’t acted, I wouldn’t have forgiven myself. But…”
She swept her disheveled hair from her face. “I was terrified. If one of my friends had been in my place, she’d have tossed them aside long ago instead of getting so deeply involved.”
Realizing she’d spoken too much, Song Yimo looked sheepish and softened her tone. “Really, anyone would’ve done the same—or maybe even handled it better than I did.”
It’s natural to avoid danger, Fang Zhen thought. Not everyone would knowingly risk themselves in such circumstances. He glanced at Zhai Muyang, then nodded, without refuting her.
Just then, the mall manager arrived, looking apologetic and rushed. Zhai Muyang didn’t want to linger. “You’ve got plenty to take care of, Captain Fang. We won’t keep you any longer.”
Fang Zhen didn’t press them to stay; there was no need to rush expressions of gratitude. The Fang family wouldn’t forget this debt.
“I’ll arrange for someone to see you off.”
“No need. We have our car.”
With a gentle squeeze of her brother’s hand, Song Yimo smiled at Fang Zhen and, following her brother’s lead, moved toward the exit.
As they passed Zhou Xin, Zhai Muyang paused.
Usually meticulous in appearance, Zhou Xin now looked somewhat disheveled. His glasses were gone, his hair mussed, and one sleeve torn, revealing bruised skin beneath.
Despite it all, Zhou Xin’s smile was broader than usual. “Boss, mission accomplished.”
“Your bonus will double this year.”
“Thank you, Boss.” Zhou Xin’s smile grew even brighter.
Zhai Muyang looked over the rest of his staff, who were all showing some signs of injury. “I’ll have a large red envelope sent to each of you. Zhou Xin, take everyone to the hospital for a check-up.”
