Chapter 56: Wealthy Beyond Compare
"Grandma, I'm back."
Song Yimo opened the door, and the warm aroma of food filled the room, dispelling the chill in the air.
Grandma Miao stood up, "I'll stir-fry some vegetables, and then we can eat. Yimo, go put down your backpack and wash your hands."
"Okay."
After getting ready, Grandma Song had already prepared the meal. Song Yimo looked at the package on the coffee table and asked, "What's this?"
"Don't you know?" Song Grandma walked over with a puzzled look. "The postman delivered it this afternoon and asked me to sign for it. Is everything okay?"
Song Yimo looked at the shipping address, which was from City S. She remembered that Zhai Muyang had said he would send some medicine over. She nodded busily, "It's alright, it's the medicine that my brother sent earlier, for you."
"I'm already taking medicine, prescribed by Dr. Ni. Is there something wrong with it?"
"It's not that it's not working, it's just that the medicine my brother sent is better. If you're worried, I'll call Dr. Ni tomorrow to ask."
Grandma Song shook her head, "It's not necessary. Muyang wouldn't harm me. It's just that I feel bad spending money unnecessarily. He seems to have plenty of money, but even with money, you can't spend it recklessly."
"Next time he comes, you can talk to him. He will listen to you for sure." Song Yimo coaxed Grandma to sit down at the dining table. Seeing Grandma Miao bringing out the dishes, she hurriedly took them and placed them on the table.
"We should talk to him."
Grandma Miao smiled, "He's filial. If the kids are filial, just accept it. Don't let their hearts grow cold. They can only rest assured when you're healthy, and Yimo can focus on studying. Isn't that right, Yimo?"
"Exactly, Grandma, don't worry about these things. I'm here, and in the future, I'll repay my brother."
She knew that everything she received had to be returned by Yimo before she was willing to accept it. Grandma Song sighed silently and stopped talking. "Let's eat, you must be hungry by now."
After dinner, before Zhai Muyang called, Song Yimo took the initiative to call him.
"I've received the medicine, thank you, Dage."
Zhai Muyang's voice, filled with a smile, sounded somewhat distorted over the phone. "It took so many days for you to receive it? Is it still good?"
"It's fine. We're in a small town, so it takes longer." Twirling the phone cord, Song Yimo asked, "Is work keeping you busy, Dage?"
"Not too bad. It's busier towards the end of the year than usual, but I still have time to make a few calls."
Zhai Muyang chuckled on the other end of the line, and his voice sounded particularly captivating through the phone. Song Yimo couldn't help but move the receiver further away, feeling a strange tingling sensation in her heart.
"Have the results come out? How did you do?"
"Better than last time, I moved up two places."
Zhai Muyang laughed, "After missing so many classes, you still improved. Did the teachers consider you a genius?"
"I don't know if they consider me a genius, but they did ask if I had any special study methods to share with my classmates."
"Did you tell them that you're naturally smart and it can't be learned?"
"I just said I memorize more for liberal arts and practice more for sciences."
Always so honest, Zhai Muyang couldn't contain his smile.
"Dage, please don't eat that pickled vegetables every day; it's not good for your stomach. I don't want to see you in the hospital one day."
Zhai Muyang glanced at the nearly empty bottles under the desk and kicked them in with some guilt. "I'll be careful."
"Just hearing you talk, I can tell you've had a lot. I won't bring them for you next time."
"I can't help it. I just love the taste. I'll definitely pay more attention in the future. Is Grandma doing well? Did the doctor say when she needs to go for a check-up?"
"Once a month for a check-up, then it will be every two months. The main concern is that the polyps might grow back."
"Okay, pay more attention to your diet." Zhai Muyang kicked a few more bottles into the desk until they were out of sight.
Coming out of the washroom, Grandma Song wiped her hands on her clothes and took the phone to start nagging. Song Yimo chuckled and went back to her room to turn on the computer.
Upon logging into Penguin, Song Yimo opened the pages of a book, habitually scrolling down, only to be met with an unexpected screen filled with red that tinged her face red.
Haven't things been peaceful recently?
Why suddenly...
She had initially thought it was Maoxianmao, but upon seeing that the ID wasn't his alone, and another called "Wealthy Beyond Compare" was intertwined with Maoxianmao's ID, it seemed like a competition was brewing.
What was going on?
A notification sound chimed, prompting Song Yimo to click on the editor's profile picture.
Zhang Chuliang: Another one who throws money around like water. Do you know this "Wealthy Beyond Compare" in real life?
It's no wonder Zhang Chuliang would think that way. "Wealthy Beyond Compare" was a newly registered ID, and judging by the name, he was clearly not aiming for BarelyRich. Song Yimo clicked on the "Wealthy Beyond Compare" page, which indicated it originated from overseas.
She did have connections overseas; her biological father and brother had reportedly moved abroad. But they had long lost contact and couldn't possibly be involved in this.
Barely Rich: I don't have any wealthy people around me. Did he give a lot in tips?
Zhang Chuliang: Haven't you checked the background?
At this point, Song Yimo had already accessed the background and was a bit taken aback by the numbers, even though she had mentally prepared herself.
Barely Rich: Did he start today?
Zhang Chuliang: To be precise, it started at noon, and he has thrown nearly forty since then. He and Maoxianmao are in a fierce competition, with a few others joining in. It seems like the notice you previously posted might not be of much use now.
Despite the numbers, Song Yimo's face didn't show any joy. She wasn't being melodramatic in rejecting the benefits and pretending to be aloof; she genuinely felt that this wasn't a good situation for her.
Barely Rich: Although I benefited in the end, I can't feel happy about it. I'm starting to feel uneasy.
On the other end of the computer, Zhang Chuliang snuffed out a cigarette with a smile. Based on Maoxianmao's previous incident, Barely Rich's current reaction was entirely within his expectations.
But it was also for this reason that he held a higher opinion of him.
Just like everyone needs to eat and sleep, even going to a public restroom costs money - he didn't expect novelists to treat money like dirt, as those kinds of people weren't suitable for writing web novels.
However, he did hope that the authors under his care would have their own beliefs, boundaries that couldn't be crossed, and a sense of sentiment unique to literary people. Unfortunately, such authors were few and far between, and he could count them on one hand in this industry.
And now, he had one more – the only one among the authors he was responsible for.
Even though such authors tended to be more troublesome than others, he savored the challenge.
He believed that such authors could still carve out a place for themselves even in this fast-food culture.
