Chapter 195: Fulfillment of Wishes
Shu Xin’s condition was steadily improving. After another thorough check-up, Song Yimo finally agreed to free up a hospital bed.
"Xiao Fan, please take Nurse Zhu to Shu Xin’s room first."
Nurse Zhu held Shu Xin in her arms, cast a quick glance around the hall, and smiled at Song Yimo before following Shu Fan out. By now, she had learned enough about the dynamics within this small circle to know exactly who was in charge.
Song Yimo set her two bags on the sofa, then turned to help her elder brother with the fruits he was carrying. But Zhai Muyang avoided her outstretched hands, placing the fruits on the table himself.
Song Yimo’s circle in S City was small—there was only Chen Fangfei. Zhai Muyang wasn’t the type to broadcast things, so visitors to see Shu Xin had been few: apart from Chen Fangfei and two assistants, it was only Zhou Xin and Zhou Qing, who had recently resumed their positions by Song Yimo’s side.
These visitors hadn’t come empty-handed; each brought generous bundles every time. Yet despite Song Yimo and Shu Fan’s best efforts to consume the treats, they’d barely made a dent. By the time of Shu Xin’s discharge, gifts had been shared with doctors, nurses, even a few young patients, and still, plenty remained to take home.
Zhai Muyang handed her a glass of water. “I’ve booked tickets for us to return the day after tomorrow.”
“Mm, Mama Miao has reminded me a few times already. She said the banquet to honor this year’s top students is long overdue.” Song Yimo sighed, “Just thinking about being paraded around when I get back makes me want to stay here until school starts.”
Zhai Muyang chuckled. “Think of it as a way to make Grandma happy.”
Song Yimo let out a long breath. She knew it was time to go back; she couldn’t delay it any longer. Mama Miao had already made plans, booking a hotel and reaching out to her teachers. Even Grandma had been subtly inquiring about her return. This wasn’t something she could just brush off.
“By the way, Dage, do you think if I give my teachers health check-up cards as a thank-you gift, they’d accept them?”
“That depends. If it’s a full physical exam, one of those cards that go for two or three thousand, they might hesitate—it could come off as too much. Why a health check, though?”
Song Yimo hesitated. She didn’t want to lie, but she couldn’t tell the whole truth either, so she remained silent.
Not reading too much into her pause, Zhai Muyang offered a suggestion. “I’ve noticed the schools in Xinghu still use traditional blackboards, and teachers who use chalk long-term have a higher risk of lung cancer. A lung screening wouldn’t cost much and might be more appropriate.”
“Could we do it in your name?” Song Yimo asked, her voice steady. “I’ll cover the cost.”
Zhai Muyang understood her intention and smiled. “Alright, you cover the cost.”
Finally, the weight that had hung over her heart for years found a place to settle. Song Yimo felt a profound relief.
In her previous life, Teacher Chen had been diagnosed with stomach cancer by the time it reached late stage two, nearly stage three. But that diagnosis was still two and a half years away. By doing these screenings now, maybe, she dared to hope, it would be something milder—something benign. At worst, it would be a stage one, which had a high cure rate.
Indeed, Song Yimo paid for the screenings, covering every teacher from her primary, junior high, and senior high schools. Yet Zhai Muyang elevated the gesture. He took an official route, partnering with a hospital to extend the health checks to every teacher in Xinghu County, under the banner of the Xinghu Scenic Area.
