Barty shields his eyes from the light, the room is so bright and so...white, it's painful to look at really
"You get used to it"
Barty stills
It's been fourteen years since he's heard that voice and yet, he recognises it as though he heard it yesterday.
Suddenly, the brightness becomes a lot more bearable as Barty raises his head.
He's younger, not that he was very old before, but he feels distinctly younger, as though he's eighteen again, which is strange.
He looks up and in front of him is a a set of great oakwood double doors in a stone archway and in front of the doors is a oakwood bench, and on that bench is where he sits.
Barty rubs his eyes and he's still there.
It's been fourteen years since he's seen Evan Rosier, since he's seen the love of his life, and yet, he's still as beautiful as the day he lost him.
"Evan" It's barely a word, more of a breath, but Barty still can't quite believe his own eyes. He never thought he'd see Evan again, never thought he'd get the privilege, and yet here he is, looking at Evan again.
Of course, Evan had haunted his dreams. Barty didn't mind so much, it was the only time he got to see Evan, so he couldn't complain really, but this time he knew he wasn't dreaming, he couldn't be, Evan looks so...real.
"It's really you?" Asks Barty
"It's really me" Evan confirms
Before he can register it, Barty is running, he's running at full speed until he reaches Evan, who is stood now, and he wraps his arms around him, lifting him off of the ground and spinning him around.
He's real.
Barty is touching him, is burying his face in Evan's beautiful curls, he's real.
Barty is so happy he could cry, but he doesn't. Instead, he pulls away just enough so that he can see Evan's face again. Evan's beautiful face that had faded in his memory slightly, that is now right in front of him.
He's so beautiful, so perfect, and Barty can't believe he's here, can't believe he's real.
Barty kisses him. He can't help himself, and the kiss is as electrifying as the first time they kissed, and every other time after that.
This is the happiest he has felt in almost two decades.
He never wants to let go of this feeling.
"I never thought I'd see you again" Barty says almost breathlessly. He's smiling so hard his cheeks hurt but he can't stop because Evan is beaming right back at him, Evan is here and Evan is real and Barty can't be happier.
"I waited for you" Evan replies
"You waited all this time for me?" Asks Barty
"I would wait a thousand lifetimes and more for you" Evan replies
They both take a seat on the bench, facing the two doors in front of them, but Barty doesn't want to focus on the doors right now, he wants to look at Evan, he's spent so long without him he doesn't want to let him go again. He can't bare the thought of losing him again, the first time was painful enough.
"What's behind the door?" Asks Barty
Evan shrugs "I don't know" Evan replies
"But you've been here so long, did you never get curious?" Asks Barty
"To me it feels like yesterday, but in all honesty, no, it felt wrong to explore it without you" Evan replies
"Well, I'm here now, we could have a look if you're ready?" Asks Barty, standing up and offering his hand to Evan who smiles up at him
"I think I am" Evan replies, taking Barty's hand in his.
They walk forward toward the door hand in hand, using their free hands to push the doors open. The doors swing open with ease, allowing the two boys to step through.
Behind the door is a beach that has a striking resemblance to Porthcurno beach, the one they got married on all those years ago.
"I think this is where we were always supposed to end up, me and you" Evan says, smiling out at the sea, but all Barty can look at is Evan.
He's always been so beautiful, and now Barty gets to do what he's always wanted to do, and appreciate Evan's beauty for eternity and longer.
"Then let us rest here" Barty replies
So they do, the two of them sit down on the beach together, neither letting the other go, neither of them wanting to go as long as they had to without each other again.
They spent longer apart than they did together and now they've been granted a second chance they aren't willing to waste.
They watch the waves roll onto the shore as Evan lays his head on Barty's shoulder.
And for the first time in what feels like forever, there is peace, the world is calm, the two of them are together and everything is okay.
The Snake is reunited with his Rose once more.
THE END.
