In the dimly lit hospital room, the hum of machines and soft glow of sterile lighting did little to mask the warmth that filled the space. Travis Kelce was propped up in bed, a little worse for wear but still grinning through the fog of anesthesia. He had just woken up from knee surgery after a night that would go down in football history—a game-winning touchdown that left him injured in the process. His knee was bandaged and aching, but that wasn't what he cared about at this moment. His mom sat beside him, fingers curled around his, while Jason stood nearby, wearing his usual brotherly smirk as he recorded every moment with his phone.
Travis blinked, squinting at Jason through the blurry haze, and asked, "Is she here yet?"
Jason grinned, exchanging a look with their mom. "Who's 'she'?"
Travis rolled his eyes, clearly irritated but too groggy to muster much more than a sleepy scowl. "C'mon, man. Don't make me say it."
Jason raised his eyebrows in mock surprise. "Oh, you mean Taylor?"
Travis broke into a goofy grin, nodding slowly, then turning to his mom, who gave him a gentle, knowing smile. "Where's Taylor? She knows, right? That I'm, you know... here?"
Jason could barely hold back his laugh. "Bro, you think Taylor doesn't know where you are? The whole world probably knows by now. Trust me, she's on her way."
Travis didn't look convinced. He furrowed his brow, trying to sit up a little straighter but wincing as he moved his knee. "You're not messing with me, right, Jase?" His voice had that vulnerable tone that rarely surfaced. "She's really coming?"
Their mom squeezed his hand, offering reassurance. "She's coming, honey. It just takes a little time, that's all."
But Travis, still drowsy and with a hazy mind focused on only one person, couldn't be pacified so easily. He mumbled, "But it's been forever..." Jason snorted, shaking his head at his brother's sense of time, clearly skewed by the drugs.
"Trav," Jason said, leaning in closer with a teasing grin, "you woke up like two minutes ago."
"Yeah, but..." Travis shifted in the bed, glancing at the door, visibly disappointed each time he saw a nurse or doctor pass by instead of Taylor. "But she's gotta be here. I mean, I made the play, right? Put it all on the line for this." He gestured vaguely toward his bandaged knee, as if the entire sacrifice had been purely for Taylor's benefit.
Jason couldn't hold back his laughter and decided it was the perfect time to record a little more. He held up his phone, trying to get Travis's reaction. "Alright, big guy, tell me about this play you 'put it all on the line' for."
Travis leaned back into his pillows, eyes half-closed, though a slow smile crept over his face as he recalled the moment. "Man, it was... you shoulda seen it. Game was on the line, and I could feel it, you know? The crowd roaring, just... everything. And in that moment, I thought, 'I gotta do this.' And you know why?" He squinted at Jason, waiting for his brother to take the bait.
Jason leaned in, still grinning. "Why?"
"For her," Travis said, almost dramatically, and his mom let out a small laugh, patting his hand.
Jason rolled his eyes playfully. "Alright, Romeo. So you got the touchdown, got yourself hurt, and now here you are. But what's up with all this drama?"
Travis sighed, eyes drifting to the door again, and muttered, "I just... I thought she'd be here by now." He sounded almost heartbroken, and Jason, half-annoyed and half-amused, lowered his phone, genuinely baffled.
"Dude, she's coming! You can't wait five minutes?"
But Travis, still under the influence of anesthesia and the haze of his own emotions, didn't seem to think five minutes was acceptable. "Jase, you don't get it." He turned to his mom, as if she might understand him better. "Mom, don't you think she should be here by now?"
