Chapter 33: Grandma's Surgery

Monday morning was like a war for the doctors.

They had morning meetings, rounds, comforting family members, answering various questions from family members, and by the time it was nearly ten o'clock, Ni Zhe finally sat down in his chair.

As the head doctor, he only did expert consultations two days a week, spending most of his time on the ward.

"Xiao Shao, have all the surgery times been arranged?"

Shao Zhen was his assistant doctor, who had been with him for a year and knew his straightforward nature. She quickly flipped through the schedule and said, "They have been arranged. One surgery at one o'clock this afternoon, one at four o'clock. Tomorrow is a major surgery, entering the operating room at eight o'clock. If all goes smoothly, she can come out by four in the afternoon. And the day after tomorrow, one surgery at nine o'clock..."

Ni Zhe waved his hand to interrupt her. "Let me see it."

Being a doctor was never easy, and he had once done six surgeries in a day. The schedule for this week was not even considered tight.

"On Wednesday, the first surgery time has been moved from nine o'clock to seven o'clock, and the second surgery has been pushed back by two hours. In between, another surgery has been added, for Zhang Chunxiang in ward seven, bed twelve."

Having just checked on the patient, Shao Zhen knew who Zhang Chunxiang was. She muttered as she made a note, "That young girl takes care of the elderly so well. I wonder if she will be able to catch up on her studies after taking such a long leave."

Just as she said that, the young girl she was talking about knocked on the office door. "Doctor Ni, Doctor Shao."

Shao Zhen liked her a lot and welcomed her inside with a smile. "Are you here to ask about your grandmother's condition?"

Song Yimo nodded. "I want to know when my grandmother can have surgery."

"Well, it's just been decided. The surgery is scheduled for around eleven o'clock the day after tomorrow. Someone will notify you in advance. Be prepared that day, but it may start earlier." Shao Zhen glanced at the head doctor and winked at Song Yimo. "It's a good thing!"

Song Yimo, who was already prepared to play the pitiful card, blinked her eyes, unsure of how to express her thanks. She just felt warm in her heart.

Having come through adversity, she had met many kind people. This was her fortune - God had been testing her, but never completely abandoned her.

"Make sure your grandmother eats lightly, doesn't overeat, and starts fasting from tomorrow evening. Just drink a small amount of water." Ni Zhe instructed without looking up. "Colon polyp removal is not a major surgery, so let your grandmother rest assured."

"Thank you, Director Ni." Song Yimo bowed deeply. "Thank you."

Ni Zhe nodded in acknowledgment, accepting her gratitude.

Shao Zhen stood at the door watching as Song Yimo hurried back to the ward, and commented, "I wish my future children would be raised according to Song Yimo's standards."

"Before that, you'll have to find your children's father."

Shao Zhen chuckled. "Director, don't underestimate me. There are plenty of men who want to be my children's father. I have to choose carefully."

Ni Zhe looked up at her, as if only realizing after a year that the student he had been mentoring was shameless.

Feeling a bit embarrassed, Shao Zhen grabbed the schedule and left. She had work to do.

Wednesday arrived in a mix of Grandma Song's anxiety and Song Yimo's anticipation.

That day, Miao Jun and his wife had both taken leave and arrived with Grandma Miao before eight o'clock.

Seeing the familiar faces, Grandma Song's suppressed anxiety subsided a bit. She held the hands of her sisters and said, "Why did you come so early? Didn't you leave at six o'clock?"

Grandma Miao glanced helplessly at her daughter-in-law. Going into the operating room at eleven, she wasn't in a rush, but her daughter-in-law couldn't bear the thought of Song Yimo sending her most loved one into the operating room alone. That brought tears to her eyes, and with her son's sympathy, she couldn't bear it either. So they left early.

But they couldn't say that. Grandma Miao patted her hand and said, "It's just that I worry about you overthinking things, so I came early to keep you company. I've asked around, there are people in our neighborhood who have had this surgery, and they were out in two hours. You don't need to worry yourself."

"Just the thought of lying on the operating table makes me nervous."

"It's only natural. I would be nervous too."

Elsewhere, He Yi was talking to Song Yimo. "Song Zhi and Song Yi didn't come?"

Song Yimo shook her head.

"They have no conscience," He Yi said through gritted teeth. Song Yi used to be a more compassionate person, but she seemed to be losing her way.

"I never expected them to come. Miao Mama, you don't need to worry about them. Grandma has me, and that's enough."

"Right, don't count on them. You have me!" He Yi sniffed. "I heard from your Miao Dad that you are capable. Song Yi will regret it in the future."

Song Yimo smiled and changed the subject. "Miao Mama, why did you take leave? You could have just waited outside the operating room. I'll be fine on my own."

"Watching you anxiously waiting outside alone would be too worrying for me. It's better for me to come and wait with you. Don't worry, I only take leave once a year, and no one can say anything."

He Yi worked as an accountant in a private company, and while her salary wasn't high, it was close by, which made it convenient for her to take care of her family.

Just then, the head nurse came over. "Bed twelve, Zhang Chunxiang, into the operating room at ten forty, get prepared. Come, family members, sign on the consent form."

Grandma Song suddenly felt a bit flustered, and her stomach started to ache again.

Song Yimo quickly signed the form and came back to help Grandma lie down. She gently massaged her stomach, holding her hand. "Don't be nervous. Once the anesthesia kicks in, you won't feel a thing. Grandma, think about it, just one sleep and you'll be healthy and able to be with me for a long time. Doesn't that make it worth it?"

"Worth it, worth it." These words gave Grandma Song courage. Just one sleep, what was there to be afraid of?

She couldn't knowingly leave a tumor in her stomach and let it turn into cancer. That would be a real loss.

Thinking this way, Grandma Song felt less fearful about going into the operating room.

When it was almost time, several people in blue-green surgical gowns pushed the operating table in. Song Yimo helped Grandma lie down and as they were wheeled towards the operating room, the hands of the grandmother and granddaughter never parted.

She kept smiling, trying to make Grandma less anxious.

"We'll stop here." The anesthesiologist was very kind. "Rest assured and wait. If everything goes well, she will be out in two hours."

"Thank you." Song Yimo squeezed Grandma's hand before letting go. "Grandma, I'll be waiting for you outside."

Grandma Song waved her hand, forcing a smile to reassure her worried granddaughter.

The lights in the operating room turned on.

He Yi put her arm around her shoulder and sat her down. "It's okay, relax."

Sending the person closest to her into the operating room, even if it wasn't a major surgery, Song Yimo couldn't relax, especially considering Grandma's age.

She could only reassure herself in her mind, reminding herself over and over that Grandma was just having a polyp removed, not cancer, not cancer!
