Chapter 27

My name is Jayson Beres.

I'm seventeen years old.

I was a contestant in the 76th Husband Games.

And...

Remember President Frost?

Yeah, I managed to seriously piss him off.

And now I'm on a train back to District R.

Home sweet home.

It's all over, for me anyway.

Earlier that day.

"Haha! I've got a day off! A day out of the arena! Finally!" I grin, almost jumping out of my favourite bed in the Training Centre, back at the Capitol, only just reminding myself that I've still got injuries and should not be 'jumping' anywhere for a while. The twelve of us that are left were all flown back here last night, after the choosing ceremony ended. Ready for our one 'day off' before the next stage of the games begin.

I dance as best I can in my inured state around my room and into the bathroom, pushing a heap of different buttons before stepping under the pounding stream of the waterfall shower. Five Seconds of Summer (who else, really?) is blasting through the shower speakers, there's a bubble machine going, the floor is massaging my feet and I feel fabulous.

Everything is going to plan.

I'm still in the games.

And I've got a 33.3% chance of becoming Luke Hemmings' wife!

It's crazy, that just doesn't happen. I can't believe I'm this close!

And truly, I think Luke could be that Real Man I've been looking for all this time, my wildest dreams of finding true love are finally becoming a reality!

I stay in the shower a lot longer than I should, because it's just so much fun, and by the time I step out my fingers and toes are all wrinkly from being under the water too long.

It's only a small sacrifice, and they'll go back to normal soon anyway.

I shrug on a fluffy white dressing gown, carefully draping it around my left shoulder, which is still extremely tender. Then I step back under the shower and push the button for the hair dryer to come on.

A gust whooshes up around me, instantly drying my caramel hair. I step out from under the again and pad over to the large vanity mirror, to make myself look mildly presentable for the day.

It's the first time in a while that I've actually had the spare time to study the girl staring back at me in the mirror.

The first thing I notice is that my hair isn't as caramel as it was when I first entered the arena, instead it's begun to fade back to the honey blonde colour it was when I began these games. My face looks less polished, less perfect than usual, and I notice a few spots and blemishes on my face. I never had time to even look at my appearance in the first arena, the fearscape. And in the second arena, I still never had a moment to give myself a facial and take care of my skin. I only ever had enough time to brush on some foundation, do my mascara and put gloss on my lips. The rest of the time there were stylists doing the work for me.
