Chapter 1:

When I wake up, the other side of the bed is warm.

My fingers stretch out, gingerly pushing my eye mask up onto my forehead, messing my hair into a structure that resembles a birds-nest.

I feel an uncomfortable sensation, like someone else is in the room, and I know all too well who it is.

Wait for it...

*CLANG!* *CLANG* *CLANG*

"WAKE UP YOU LAZY SLOTH!" My little sister yells, I groan in reply, rolling over in my bed and mumbling a curse word as I do so.

What did I ever do to deserve a wake up like this? Every damn morning....

My little sister seems to find joy in waking me up each morning in a loud and horrible way, this morning, I'm suspecting it's being delivered by pot and spoon, yesterday it was a bucket of freezing cold water.

After a few minutes of this, she eventually stops clanging the pot and spoon, when my mother shouts 'Thats Enough!' at her, from the kitchen.

"You do realise what day it is today, don't you sis?" She pokes my side, I curl up even more in my blankets.

She pokes me again, "It's reaping day you idiot."

What did she just say?!

My eye snap open and I throw my duvet off as I instantly sit up. I can hear my sister chuckling behind me.

I turn to her, and raise my eyebrows, pointing towards the door, "Out."

She rolls her eyes and stalks off, I slam the door behind her and turn to my wardrobe.

I grab the first things I can find, an oversized raglan tee, track pants and socks. I quickly change into all of these things, and then turn to the mirror, pulling my eye mask off of my forehead.

I can't even be bothered describing how horrible I look, but some would probably say that I look like I was dragged backwards through a gorse bush.

After pulling out most of my honey blonde hair whilst brushing it, I throw it up into a high pony tail, shove my feet into a pair of sneakers, grab my phone and make a sprint out of my room for the front door.

"Just where do you think you're-" My mother begins, looking up from the kitchen table, where she's doing her daily sudoku puzzle.

My sister glances at me, from some contorted position on the floor, doing her morning yoga.

"Can't talk. Gotta go. Be back soon. BYE!" I blurt, waving quickly, before exiting the house and slamming the door behind me.

Then I begin to sprint to the forest, looking down and checking the time on my phone as my feet pound against the cobblestone pavement, phew, I have five minutes to spare.

I take in the surroundings of my small District as I continue to run to my destination, the streets of the place are deserted, even at nine in the morning, guess everyone else is getting ready for the reaping. Well, not me, I have other things to attend to at this hour.
