Chapter 31.

The next day...

When I wake up, the other side of the bed is occupied.

My fingers stretch out, seeking the warmth of whoever lays beside me, and they clasp around a broad shoulder.

Dale.

I'm too tired and confused to think rationally, so I attempt to pull my best friend closer to me, I need human contact right now. When everything around me is falling apart, I need a rock, someone to cling on to.

He doesn't object and I wrap my arms around him in Kalia's spare bed, the sun is beginning to stream in through the crack in the curtains.

We lay like that for what feels like forever, in a semi conscious state. Until my breath suddenly catches and I realise that I don't have time to be sleeping, there are things I must do. I can't pretend that everything around me is picture perfect, that's far from the truth.

And because of my inability to get to the Capitol on time.

Someone must've...Gone...Last night.

It's all my fault.

I pry my arms off of Dale and stumble out of bed, getting slight head rush from the quick jerky movements I'm making.

"Jayson?" Dale mumbles, still in bed, "What's up?"

I look over to him, "We've got to get up, today is going to be another big day."

I hear a slight murmur in reply, I sigh and turn towards the door to head downstairs into Kalia's kitchen.

The lithe brunette is already making breakfast in the kitchen when I slowly pad into the room, she looks up and offers me a slight smile, before busying herself again with the bacon and eggs she is cooking.

"Did you get a good sleep?" She asks, her voice soft.

I nod a little, "Yeah, thankfully."

My voice sounds like I've just run sandpaper down my throat, all hoarse and croaky. I guess it's from all of the crying I did last night.

I walk over to the kitchen sink and pour myself a glass of water, sculling it swiftly, and sighing in relief as the liquid cascades down my throat, smoothing out all of the roughness.

Kalia is occupying herself by placing the bacon and eggs on separate plates when I turn from the sink.

She passes me a plate and I take it gratefully, "Thank you. It looks amazing."

I inhale the scent of a cooked breakfast and take a seat at her dining room table to savour it. Kalia comes to join me, and Dale takes his plate of food with a grin when he enters the room a few minutes later.
