Lunch.

Even the word makes me shiver.

Ok, I’m kidding, lunch doesn’t actually scare me. But figuring out where to sit does.

It used to anyway. I spent a few years at school eating lunch alone, it was ever since that day I decided to bring a platter of vegetables to Treaty Thursday in class. Treaty Thursday was a tradition in one of my old classes, and each week there was a roster for each of the students in that class to bring a treat for all of the other students.

The girls and guys doing this prior to me had all brought along lollies, cupcakes, fudge, and all of the sweet treats in the book.

So I’d decided to do something different, and had spent my whole evening cutting celery, carrots, capsicum and a load of other veggies and placing them on a stylish platter with a bowl of my homemade guacamole and hummus.

I though it was a treat at the time, but my fellow thirteen year old classmates had strongly disagreed.

For the next two years, I was an outcast at lunch time, because everyone thought that I was too healthy to eat with them and that I didn’t appreciate the joy of eating lollies.

Believe me, I did, and I do still love treats, but can’t vegetables be treats too?

Luckily, my classmates soon came around, and by the age of 16 my table quickly became the popular table. As my fellow peers discovered clean eating and fitspo.

That was the year I became pretty darn popular.

So, I guess that was a wee story of my life right there, but today, the tables were completely different.

Because every District was just eating with the rest of their District.

Fair enough, I suppose, but after the utter undoing of even an inkling of a relationship with Luke a few minutes ago in the bathroom. I’m still shaking like a leaf.

“Jayson, are you alright hun?” Lucy asks me, resting a comforting hand on my shoulder as the two of us take slices of pizza from the buffet table to the side of the large training lunch room.

I nod as I place a couple of forkfuls of salad on my plate next to my slice of pizza, before heading over with Lucy to take a seat at the table our fellow R girls are sitting at.

“Wow, you don’t look so good…” Serena comments as I take a seat opposite her and take a bite from my pice of pizza.

I quickly swallow my bite, not really wanting to talk with my mouth full, “I’m fine. It’s nothing. Such happy! Much fun! So joyful! Pizza!”

Anna raises her eyebrows, “You sound like that Doge meme.”

I sigh, I sometimes do that when I’m anxious.

“Really? Sorry, I’m fine though. Nothing’s up, nothing at all…”

My three fellow tributes all give me a speculative look.
