I almost choked on the apple I was chewing when I heard a voice on the other line. Did she actually pick up my call?

I can see that Dalton was also surprised that Laine didn't reject my call because he perked up on his seat. "H- Hey, Laine, uhm..."

"Excuse me, who is this?"

Who? She's asking who? Is this serious?

She can't be serious. It's not just hurtful on her part. It also is in mine! Didn't she think of that?

I took a deep breath and spoke. "Look, Laine. I know I hurt you and I'm so sorry for that. But please, forgive me now. Please? Listen, I'm sorry I lied to you. I lied to you in saying I lied to you. Does that even make sense? Please, Laine. I just had to say it to end our argument because I knew those were the words you were waiting for. And I just had to let you win, because losing in a fight is much easier than losing you. But it seems like I'm slowly losing you now. Can we not let that happen? Please, Laine. I'm sorry. I love you." I nervously took a bite from my apple. This is now or never.

Dalton was silently watching me even though he can't hear the other line. Seconds passed, and there still isn't a sound coming from Laine.

"Hey, Laine. Speak up, please?"

I heard a few shuffling sounds before she talked. "Woah, uhm... I... I'm sorry but-"

"But what? Are you now ready to break up with me?"

Dalton widened his eyes at me and mouthed, "DUDE NO." but nah, too late. I already said it.

"No! No! I mean uh... I'm sorry but I'm not Laine and I don't know any Laine... I think you got the wrong number."

Wrong number? What? Since when?

My jaw literally dropped.

"I hope it goes right for you and Laine, though. Good luck, mister." Then she hung up.

Wrong... Number?

I was staring into space until I saw a hand waving in front of me. Dalton brought me back to reality. "Hey... Are you okay? Uh... Don't worry, bro. If you're meant to be, you'll still end up together. Don't lose hope. She's still there. You can always get her back."

I slowly removed my phone from my ear and carefully checked the number I called.

*********6

Laine's number ends with a 9.

I squeezed my eyes shut and took a bite from my apple again. I'm so stupid.

I'm so stupid.

I'm so stupid.

I'M SO STUPID.

"Hey... Will." Dalton placed a hand on my shoulder. "Breakups are not always the end."

"No, no... We didn't break up."

"Oh... What did she say then?"

"She said she's not Laine... And she doesn't know any Laine..."

"What? I don't get it."

I looked at Dalton, "I just said my practiced spiel to a stranger." He furrowed his eyebrows and shook his head slightly. "I called a wrong number, Dalton."
