Meera stood by the entrance, fidgeting with her dupatta, a mix of unease and anxiety swirling within her.
Saanvi and Rohan had arranged a small gathering for their close friends just a few hours before the wedding.
She glanced at her watch. 2:54 p.m. Her mother was about to call in a few minutes, and her hands shook with nervousness, bracing herself for the worst.
As she watched all the few people arriving, her phone buzzed insistently in her pocket. She pulled it out, her heart sinking as she saw her mother's name flashing on the screen.
"Hello?" Meera answered cautiously.
"Meera," her mother's voice crackled through the phone, filled with a sternness that made Meera stiffen.
"You still haven't replied to your father. We gave you enough time to think about it, and you have done nothing but disappoint us."
"Mom, I-" Meera tried to interject, but her mother cut her off, her voice sharp and unforgiving.
"Don't interrupt me! Stop being selfish. You don't get to have a choice anymore. Kuch toh sharam karo, Meera. Think about all the hard work your father and I have done. Is this how you repay us? You've never listened to a single thing we've said!" her tone was cold and dismissive.
"Mom, please..." Meera's voice wavered, her heart racing. Tears pricked at the corners of her eyes, her mother's harsh words crushing her spirit.
"Enough! I don't want to hear your excuses. You're ruining this for yourself. Agar tum yahi karna chahti ho toh humse tumhe beti kehne ki ummed mat rakhna."
Her mother snapped before abruptly ending the call, leaving Meera standing there in stunned silence.
She stared at her phone, the weight of her mother's words sinking in.
"What's wrong with me?" she whispered, her voice trembling as she slid down the wall, hugging her knees to her chest in the empty hallway.
"Why can't I just be enough?"

Sidharth's POV
Sidharth entered the hall, scanning the crowd almost instinctively.
His eyes drifted from one face to another, each familiar smile and laugh somehow irritating him today.
He shook his head, "Kya ho gaya hai tujhe, Sidharth? Why are you even looking for her?"
She was a stranger, someone he'd only known for a handful of days. Logic dictated he should let her be.
She clearly wanted to deal with her problems alone.
